Check your battery cables,, they are probably loose or corroded. Side mount batteries that hold multiple cables have this problem that occurs over an extended period of time. Cleaning the connections and retightening the hold down bolt may fix it. Sometimes a 3/8 bolt and a washer with a nut can be used to get
a more positive holding force to keep the cable tight.

This car uses a key with a transponder chip in it. The ignition reads the value of the chip thru 2 small contacts just inside the entrance of the keyhole. These contacts are known to get dirty, wear out, or become totally disconnected from the wire they are hooked to. Use electrical cleaner in the lock cylider and run the key in and out a few times to clean the lock. This is your temporary fix. The next item you may want to try ,is having another chip key made. If this doesn't work, then you will need to replace the ignition cylinder. You can try "Plastichead Keys" for these parts. They can be reached at [email protected].

sounds like the ignition module is going bad.

you need to use an OBDII scan tool that will read any "error" codes and give you the system that will be causing the check engine light to come on. this tool will also allow you to erase the code after you have read it. write the code down as you may have to pinpoint exactly what part may have failed and needs replacing. something as simple as a loose gas cap will cause the check engine light to come on. it could be any of a dozen different emission or ignition sensors that may be bad depending on the error code. all 1996 and newer vehicles sold in the US will have the OBDII system and standard diagnostic/data link connector, which is usually under the driver side of the dash, to plug the scan tool into to read the DTC's(diagnostic trouble codes).

I have a 2000 Bonneville - I had a problem with the car stalling out - then it did not want to start back up. (When it did it would idle up and down and then die) I changed out the mass air flow sensor - now I have not had a problem. Good luck with it.
