97 Saturn SL2 has intermittent no start issue. It seems to start after its been sitting for a while but I'm always unsure if its been 10 or 15 minutes only. Maybe it will and maybe it won't. After sitting about half an hour it usually does start on the first attempt. What the heck is going on? Mechanics tell me it has to be not starting for them to test it but if I drive to them it is always working fine. Very frustrating -- any advise will be helpful.

SOURCE: 2000 saturn want start after driving for a while

Saturn has had a problem with bad crank position sensors which are fairly cheap and easy enough to replace. (about $20 or less)

When the sensor gets hot, it won't work, so after cooling down it will work again. If you test it, it must be tested when hot otherwise it will test fine, please let me know if you have any more questions and I would be glad to help.

good luck

Check your oil while warm. If it looks like chocolate milk, you have coolant in your oil. If your vehicle is cold, undo the oil drain plug and see if you have coolant coming out of the oil pan. You can also rent a Block Tester at Autozone for $25.00 (you get the 25.00 back when you return it) and buy some block test fluid ($8.99). You get a lot of fluid and will be able to check multiple times. Pour the test fluid into the tester to the line and take off your radiator cap. Run your car until it's at the high side of normal and put the tester into your radiator filler neck. Depress the aspirator bulb over and over for two minutes and see if the blue fluid turns green or yellow. If it does, you have combustion/emission gases in the coolant and therefore a cracked/warped block/head or a bad head gasket. If it turns green or yellow, disconnect one head's spark plug wires and re-test. If you have the same happen, you have a problem with that head. Check the other too.

I had a problem with starts on my 98 sc2, did it twice only, but it would start up, shake a bit then shut down like it wasn't getting fuel, or a wrong mixture. Replaced the coolant temperature sensor and starts / idles like new now... goodluck

reasearch "intake manifold gasket". i have the same car, and the same problem, and everything ive read so far points to the intake manifold gasket. apparently during production there was an error that caused the original gaskets to crease. i would suggest taking some brake or carb cleaner and spraying it around intake #1 while the car is idling in park, this should cause the engine to idle rougher. if it does the gasket is your problem.
here's a link to another thread that sheds a lot of light on the issue, and even has some instructions on how to repair.

My 97 Saturn SL2 has a "rattling" sound in the front of the engine (timing chain end). I replaced the upper chain guide that sits between the two cam gears. Seems to have helped some, but...

at that age you need new timing gears and chain, they sell complete kits on eBay for less than a hundred bucks. while you are in there replace the water pump too unless you know it has already been replaced. the oil pump is at the bottom, might want to consider that also.

1992 saturn sl2 will run if service engine light comes on when turning key to start car. when it does start and run if the service engine light flickers or comes on the fuel pump relay will click and car...

This may just be a problem with the wiring of the car's ECU. It could be a loose wiring. The ECU may be receiving power intermittently. It could also be just an issue with the EFI relay. The ECU signal from the EFI is intermittent causing the flickering and the clicking sound.

I have a 97 sl2 saturn put new alternator on it and battery still drains what could it be

auto door lock systems are great for draining batteries while the car sits. so are trunk, glove box, and other interior lights. someone is going to have to figure what is draining the battery while the car is off by troubleshooting it and eliminating things.

My 93 Saturn SL2 intermittent stalling issues

I would look at the egr system. First pull the valve and clean it. If you have a vacuum tester this would be a good time to test the valve itself as well. When under load you should be able to see the diaphragm engage and hold and then release as you release the vacuum. If that doesn't work check and/or replace the egr solenoid. It's located on the driver's side of the valve cover and usually runs about 60$.

Yours is a common complaint and the above is the most common remedy. Outside of that you might want to check and clean the idle air control valve and the port where it's housed. If it is extremely dirty or something managed to get stuck in there that could affect you vehicle running at idle as well.

Another thing, even though you just changed the plugs, pull one back out and look at it. If is fouled with oil you might need a new valve cover gasket which if it's leaking badly enough will impede spark.

94 Saturn sl2 won't start

try getting a small bucket and pulling off the fuel line that runs to the engine and have some one crank the car over and give it fuel to see if anything come out of the fuel line. if it doesnt then eaither a line is blocked or the pump is not working.
