I have a 97 Grand Marquis, and tried to start it. The electronics came on, but the car didn't turn over. I turned the key to "off" and removed it, but the electronics stayed on. I can even remove the ignition lock cylinder, and the whole thing stays on. I took off the plastic steering column shroud, and noticed a pink and black wire with a plastic crescent-shaped clip and a lead dangling loose, and couldn't find a place to attach it. Anyway, please let me know I can do, or what further information you need to help me with this problem. Thanks Tom

The lock isnt turning the back part which is the contact switch, use a screwdriver to turn it off or disconnect the battery. I think the problem lies in the barrel is got a piece broken that goes from the barrel to the contact switch .Without seeing it myself i couldnt tell you whats wrong or why the barrel has come out but their is a small hole in the case where you can push in to remove the barrel but in all honesty ask a local mechanic to have a look for you as this mat be beyond the average hme mechanic to sort out also their is a security reader that reads the chipped key callled a transponder so a local mechanic who knows what hes doing is your best best .Sorry if this appears a negative answer but as stated i would need vehicle in front of me to diagnose the correct repair.

SOURCE: high beams on constantly!

The Flash to Pass feature must press a rod down somewhere when you pull back on the Column stick control. Seems like a spring is broke to reset the control. This may be a separate piece from the Column switch.

If you remove the column switch and see where the 2 parts meet you could pull the stuck part back through the column. You may have a bare wire in the column especially with a tilt wheel.

SOURCE: I need help replacing a 1995 Mercury Grand Marquis

EASY. with key turned to ON, you will see a small hole on bottom of steering column cover about an inch from the steering wheel. take a small screwdriver or coat hanger rod and find the little button about 2 inches from where you inserted the key, now depress that button (up) and with the button depressed, pull out the cylinder. If you have the new cylinder, you will see where the button is in relation to the end/ Cylinders are made by Motorcraft, Ford and Standard. and will come with 2 new keys.

Ignition will not turn

if the key is manual , you will need a locksmith to reset the wafers inside the ignition. also try spare key first. if key is electronic, you will need to plug in computer. some cars have a system linking gear
to ignition, eg on some mercs

When I put the key in, the key will not turn over, the radio and the lights work. No sound at all. I still got a jump thinking that it was the battery no luck with that. Any clue?

Hi, I recently had the same problem with my 98 Grand Marquis. It was actually the night before I had to be at the airport at 4:30 AM. Anyways it's a bad terminal on the battery. When I would go to start my car I would turn it once and all the electronics came on but when I went to start it it clicked and everything shut off. If this is whats happening then it is a bad terminal to the battery and it needs to be replaced. Hope this helps!

How do you change an idler pulley on a 97 mercury grand marquis

Using either a serpentine belt tool or a long ratchet and a socket on the tensioner pulley bolt, turn the tensioner to relieve tension and pop the belt off. Remove the idler pulley bolt and replace the idler pulley. To finish it up simply reinstall the belt.

Turn signals not working on 97 mercury Marquis

Sounds like the multi-function switch (I assume wipers, and dimmer still works).
Its about a $100 part from Ford, most jobbers won't carry this part, but you might get lucky if you call ahead.

The trickiest part of the fix is removing the key tumbler from the right side of the steering column. The rest of the job is quite straight forward. Shouldn't take more than an hour.
Good Luck

Couldn't Turn off my 96 Grand Marquis

Seems your ignition swith has come disconected from the key switch. The actual swith is not the key. The key links to a switch on top of the steering column down around the pedals. Or the switch itself is broken free. The switch is replaceable although a pain to access. No need to pull out the steering column. Good luck.

Turn signal don't work or the flashers?

If you still have flasher problems, I read on Google to spray WD-40 down in and around the hazzard flasher button, then press it up and down several times...and BINGO...all flashers and signals worked again....just had some dirt and dust in the wiring....
