When I sometimes turn the Key on my 2000 Jimmy the engine won't turn over but the starter motor makes a loud high pitched noise like it's spinning freely?

Something is wrong in your start circuit. From battery to ignition switch, and ending at the starter solenoid. You would have to start checking for where power is lost between the switch and the starter. If you have power to the starter solenoid on the small wire at the starter (can check with a test light while someone holds the key in start), then the starter would need testing.
might be a burned spot on the starter contacts where the brushes power the motor. tap the starter to see if problem goes away. sometimes you can clean the contacts but that is a temporary fix.
Check Engine Light flashing when accelerating ,severe engine misfire . Something in the ignition system is breaking down under a load . If the starter engages an spins the engine when you turn the key to start an it doesn't start an run , it has no spark or fuel pressure . If you don't know this or how to diagnose .suggest you take your vehicle to a qualified repair shop . Pull two plug wires off the top of the same coil an crank the engine , if you do not see a spark jump from one coil tower to the other you have an ignition system problem . ignition module or crankshaft position sensor
When you say it won't start you mean it won't crank, right ?
If you have a duralast starter from auto zone, that may be the problem. Aftermarket brand starters and alternators can be lemons sometimes. A mechanic would check for voltage at the starter with the key in the on and start positions. Also check the ground connections. Its possible the starter is not getting full battery voltage for some reason.
ANY FAULT CODES? HAVE YOU CHECKED THE STARTE DEPTH FOR PROPER CLEARANCE? HAVE YOU RITIATED THE FLYWHEEL TO LOOK FOR MISSING TEETH? I HAD AN 82 T/A AND THAT WAS WHAT CAUSED MY STARTER PROBLEMS. AS FAR AS NO SPARK DO YOU HAVE ANY FAULT CODES INTHE ELECTRONICS? TO TEST WITHOUT A SCNNER GO TO THIS LINK
There is most likely a problem with your starter -- if it is not grabbing the engine to turn it over when you turn the key, the starter motor will spin (giving you the whirring noise) but the engine will not move. First things first ... have someone turn the key, and hit your starter with a stick or something ... sometimes this will free up whatever part is not working proper5ly, and you won't have to replace your whole starter. If hitting your starter doesn't work ... and if you are good with cars, try replacing the starter and see if that helps.
Hopefully those will help ... if not, you will probably have to take the car to a mechanic to get it fixed, as there are several other parts that could be causing the issue -- but they are hard to get to and require some experience to know what you are looking for.
Hi,from the clues you give I guess that the starter motor is in need of a service (worn brush gear) I presume that when it does not start that the engine does not make a cranking noise. If the engine is cranking but failing to fire up, then it could be anything from the fuel pressure pump to the engine control system. there is a lot of clever stuff going on when you start your engine. Some simple things you should try first. Check visually that all vacuum hoses and wiring is secure and in good visual order( dodgy looking wires are prone to intermittent failure!... Do this next time it fails to start and recheck after gently adjusting ? wd 40 may ease problem temp. Also check service of spark plugs especially correct gap. Make a note of engine temp/ and air temp. loose wires are usually more loose in cold mornings!.. starting enrichment may not be sufficient with a wide plug gap. Check battery for full power output on starting. will it pull the car on the starter /
Have you tried to turn the stearing wheel side to side while turning the key? Sometimes the wheel gets bumped and it locks with the key in the ignition and the added tension won't alow you to turn key unless you turn the wheel from one side to the other.
