SOURCE: finding the relay for electric fan on '89 jeep cherokee laredo 4.0

It is on the driver fender near air filter housing. Also next to the fuel pump ballast resistor. It is the white 3 inch long piece of ceramic on the fender with eletricial connectors on each end.

No, not with out a lot of work. Electronics are most likely different on the 2 also.

keemo68 is right, I had the same prblm and it was one of the relays. There are 4 relays located under the hood, passenger side, just above the wheel. They're quite cheap so buy one, then replace the first one, if still not ok put it back in place and try to replace the second one, til you find the defective one. Think I've paid $5-$6 in a wholesale electronics parts, they're quite standard.

Four wheel drive wont engage

Hi ninja,

Select-Trac?

Make sure you have plenty of 90 wt. in the front axle. I've got an '86 Cherokee Laredo. It doesn't kick right in to gear. You need to be moving, but not to fast. Sometimes reversing, then back into drive works.

When you disengage it, if you are moving at or above 30 mph, you'll hjear a rapid clicking from the front axle as it tries to let go. Put it in neutral for a second or two. That will take enough strain off the drive train to allow it to disengage.

Best regards
Mike

89 jeep cherokee 4.0 it bogs down and will accelerate in drive

Make sure that the timing is correct and that the spark from the coil is healthy. Problem can also be with the overdrive in the converter. If it's stuck on it can do that too.

The engine turns over with no trouble but when i put it in drive or reverse it doesnt move

If your fluid is full and shifter is moving the lever on the transmission when you move it, likely the transmission has gone away.

Haven't used 4Lo for about 8 years and can't remember thew sequence to put it in 4Lo - is it gear in neutral then shift or is it keep moving and then put in 4 Lo ?

shift from 2wh to 4hi to neutral then 4lo all while in drive and moving slowly. The owners manual and repair books say you can actually damage the transfercase if the jeep is parked. You can go into 4hi at any driving speed, just not too fast!

4 wheel drive not engaging

I do not have a vacuum diagram for the 89 Cherokee, but my 89 had the same issue several times and all it was is that the block of vacuum lines that go into the front axle on the rear of the axle on the passenger side of the vehicle. I ended up having to put a zip tie around the axle and hose block to hold it on. Have not had the issue again since doing this. Hope that helps.
