Recently my 2001 Silverado 1500 ext cab 4x4 has started making a clicking whiny noise while driving, It's been making a clicking noise when turning off and on for quite a while but just today it started doing it all the time while driving. Right before the noise started I heard a thump from under the rear end and felt a **** in the truck.

replace the front u joint. I had the same issue with my truck, and I noticed that the front u joint didn't come stock with a greese zerk, the oem replacement does so they wear out fast. by the time I found it, it still looked ok till I removed the drive shaft....It was very close to wearing through.

SOURCE: Rear end in 1999 chevy 1500 binds on turns

well i had the same problem everyone told me the clutches in the rearend were sticking making it stick in positive traction (only your passanger side rear wheel pulls unless you start spinning then a type of clutch engages the other side so you have traction then when you stop spinning it disengages it should never be engaged if your on pavment) now you can do what i did listen to everyone when they tell you its normal or you can take it to someone with experience now and save yourself some money cause it will start popping then it will get some viberation then next it will break the clutches and when that happens you will have to replace the pinion, ring, and the spider gears as well as the clutches.make sure you have pleanty oil in rearend if you dont add the limited slip conditioner it might free clutches up but if i had it to do over id put it in the shop or stop driving it before i broke something hope this helped

Gas gauge will jump around show empty when not 2001 silverado 2500 ck 4x4 ext cab

The gas gauge is part of the fuel pump assembly. I just replaced mine on 2X4 same truck. New assembly from GM is $500, $275 from Auto Zone. If inclined to do yourself, you can tilt bed up in drivers side. See other posts about changing fuel pump.

99 Silverado 4-wheel drive not engaging

It does not seem that sufficient diagnosis was done. No, you cant give a specific diagnosis like that without tearing unit down. It's likely that they told you the most common failure and left it at that. Likely there is a problem with your unit...I think this becomes more of a trust issue than a mechanical one. A second opinion from an independent reputable shop may help but either way, you need to have it fixed. In not using it much, it makes me wonder how it got worn.
good luck

Clicking noise in front end when 4x4 is ingaged.

Have the front hubs and CV joints checked, that is where this kind of noise most commonly comes from.
