Check the electric motors at that are located underneath the fabric in the trunk of the car. One is behind the left tail light the other underneath the roof hold.
First open them up if the gears are exposed it means that they are not engaged. To re engage simply push them back into place.
Before re engaging manually bring up the roof and then press the roof sequence button.
To make sure that the roof electric motors are functioning before re engaging let someone press the button and check that the gears move, While disengaged they will only move for about 5 to 10 seconds.
1st Scenario The noise you are decribing can be from the driving gear from one of the electric motors could be worn down in which case you will have to get it replaced the best place to get a cheap second hand one is at a scrap yard.
2nd Scenario If the trunk still wont open then the loose cable you are describing has snapped you will know witch cable because if the roof lid is open check for a button on one of the right lid catch which tells the car the roof lid is now closed and secure so the trunk is now allowd to open. If this is the case replace the cable.
To alastair bda if this does not solve your problem I have sent you an e-mail with further questions to investigate your noise problem. I will be waiting on your reply.
That is not the problem the problem is your convertable roof is not closing properly to test this let someone press down on the roof lid and then try to open the trunk, To fix this let the roof lid open and let the roof come up until the back part stands up to let the roof lid close so that the roof hold is exposed look on the right hand side of the car (if your standing at the back) under the roof lid catch there is a small plastic buttun that the roof lid catch needs to pres down on, this tells the car that the roof lid is seucre and it is now safe to let open the trunk, All you have to do is set the tension on the cable for that roof lid catch and the problem is sorted.
The Roof Mechanism works with two motors similiar to the ones that wund the windows. Now the two mechanism are located in the left side of the trunk.
The trunk wont open Because of the roof lid that is not closed properly. How you can test this is to press down on the right sid of the roof lid and then try to opne the trunk.
Now the reason that this is happening is that the roof lid is not closing properly nad pressing on a small orange buttin located just below the right hand side roof lid catch. How you are going to remedy this problem is to adjust the cable tension to close more securely.
Now the two motors in the trunk that works the convertable roof can be engaged and disengaged on motor works the roof lid and the other one the roof.
You need to get these motors in sync so that they open and close the roof in the correct order.
The problem is that your roof(SOFT TOP) lid isnt closing properly. If you open the roof lid you see there is a button on one of the latches that tells the car that the roof is securely closed if your roof lid is not secure the trunk wont open. To test this press down on the roof lid and the try to open the trunk.
The top works with two circular motors in the trunk. The motors are similar to the ones that open and close the windows. The motors of the roof can be engaged and disengaged. One motor drives the roof lid the other one drives the roof itself. The trick to engage and disengage the motors so that they are correctly syncronized to opening and closing.
the promblem is that when the top is raised that the wire to the lock motors is hhot on both sides so the motor doesn't no to open or close and the rear hatchwill not come down
