Harmonic balancer pulley broke on my 1998 ford Taurus. I replaced the pulley and the new one also broke within 100 miles. The break is similar to if another pulley had locked up causing the crankshaft pulley to spin in two but all other pulleys seem to be spinning freely. Any idea on what can be causing this?

Check the pully on your a/c unit. Mine on my 2003 ford f250 siezed up and locked the engine up. Prior to that my harmonic balancer pully failed.

I had this same problem a while back, water pump... replaced the water pump and all was well. If you run it for very long without you'll kill it. Hope this helps, KJS

SOURCE: how to replace crankshaft pulley on 98 ford

You will have to get the engine loose and raise it enough to slide it off the crankshaft. If not it hits the frame rail. There is only about 4 inches of free space there.

SOURCE: 1999 Ford Taurus. Can see

There is a key way in the crankshaft and the balancer with a woodruff key that keeps it locked in place. The woodruff key resembles a half moon shape. You will have to remove the balancer to see what kind of damage there is and go from there.

SOURCE: how to circumvent the a/c clutch pulley on a 2003 ford taurus

On a 3.0 OHV you can not bypass the a/c pulley. You either have to replace the compressor or you can buy a pulley and bracket that takes the place of the a/c compressor. You can find these at your local parts store. You other option is to find a used a/c compressor. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them. Can a harmonic balancer cause a belt to misalign and cause premature belt wear?

If it's clear that the alignment of the belts isn't correct, then your balancer probably is not the problem. You can usually see the harmonic balancer "wobble" as the engine is running if it's damaged, a visual inspection should give you an idea if it's the problem. It would have to be in terrible condition to cause your belt to change position.

Usually this problem occurs after an alternator, water pump, idler pulley, or similar part has been replaced with one that doesn't line up the same as the OEM part that was replaced. This is one of the most important reasons for comparing your core or old part with the new parts precisely, before installing the replacement parts.

Try aligning the belt on all of the pulleys except one (at a time and then switch to leave out another item), this should help you to determine what is out of alignment specifically and then you should be able to measure the difference hopefully identifying a fix.

How do i get printable instructions on removal of engine on 1996 Taurus lx 3.0 trying to replace c.s. pulley and harmonic balancer.?

if you support the engine sub frame at the pulley end then unbolt it you can raise the car. by doing this the motor will lower and It should be enough to give you enough clearance to remove the pulley and balancer.

The Serpentine belt keeps walking off the Crank shaft pulley by one rib as if the pulley moved away from the engine.. Is this where the harmonic balancer is. If so, is it difficult to change?

Before you change anything,,check and see if everything is in line..Also feel all the pulleys and make sure everything turns ok...If the powersteering pump has been replaced,,sometimes the pulley was not pressed on far enough..If it seem to be the harmonic balancer make sure its not damage and the bolt in the middle is tight...If you remove it..You remove middle bolt,,then you have to use a puller to remove the harmonic balancer itself..unusuall for the harmonic balancer to be bad unless it was hit by something

HARMONIC BALANCER

I have a '94 Tempo, it had a "ticking" sound. It was the "harmonic balancer" (crankshaft pulley) a local mechanic changed it for $60, the part cost me $120 (I work for a Ford dealership) $180 without employee discount. you can get one for much less at a junkyard if you can find one. Good luck, Sean

2001 Ford Taurus, Harmonic balancer removal

I had this problem and had to block the teeth of the harmonic balancer with a 2-ton hydraulic jack handle (use an assistant to hold) while I torqued on the bolt with a 4-way lug wrench and a length of pipe. Took a minute, but finally we heard the "ping" of the seal breaking and were able to remove that BAB.
