Engine will not turn over, makes a clicking or rapid clicking sound
I have a 2001 Ford Escape and when I turn the key it clicks or makes a long rapid clicking sound. I think it is either the selenoid or starter. Any suggestions? The engine does not turn over.
Re: Engine will not turn over, makes a clicking or rapid...
You are correct it is the starter the clicking you hear is the bedix wheel which spins the flywhell to crank the engine. replace the starter and this will solve the problem

This sound is the relay, Is the battery new if more than 1 and 1/2 yrs. you need to replace your battery. Is your engine cranking when start, if not, the battery need to be replace.
Jump start it from another battery, if it starts then your battery is bad. If it still makes the same sound without starting then your starter needs to be replaced.
A single click is the solenoid on the starter engaging. This is a pretty typical symptom of a bad starter if everything else seems normal.
Rapid repeated clicking while the key is in the crank position is a good sign the battery is to weak to turn the engine over.
Back to the single click. Try turning the key to the crank position rapidly and repeatedly. Sometimes this will make the starter work wich will also confirm that it is bad.
the battery for the vehicle likely dead, check the owners manual, you may need to remove the safety switch from the hi volt battery in order to boost it,.
sounds like you are on the right track, the battery you have in it has done well to last that long but it sounds like a fell cells have decided to call it quits
sounds like the starter solenoid is defective, the contacts inside the solenoid get worn from electrical arching and then a no start occurs, the indication is a fairly loud clicking noise when you try to start the engine.
