My 2009 Kia Sportage made a loud rattling noise when in park or neutral coming from the engine area.. As you shift , drive it goes away, reverse it comes back and finally in drive it goes away. (noise sounds like when you turn the key to start after the engine is already on.) If you shut the car down, upon starting again the problem goes away. Intermittant problem. Finally, it did not start, so we changed the starter and the problem went away for 2 weeks. Now the same thing is happening again.

OK again, Intermittent problem.....start car, in park, sounds like the starter is engaged. As you shift down to reverse, noise goes away. As you hit neutral, noise comes back. As you go to drive noise goes away. After turning the vehicule off, and restarting, the problem is gone. THANKS for Any help you can give....ps changed starter 2 times....

SOURCE: Engine Rattling

Try checking the heat shield on your exhaust system. You should have one over the manifold and one over your cat converter under the car.

SOURCE: Reverse just quit on '95 Pathfinder

If it is an automatic transmission it probably needs transmission fluid. If a standard shift check and adjust shift linkage.

SOURCE: Holden Viva- Automatic transmission troubles.

Hey mate, Had exactly the same problem. Suggest you take the car to your local auto transmission repair centre (not holden) and they can check the electrical diagnostics - if it the Transmission inhibitor Switch (as it was on mine - if so should cost you no more than 1 hour labour and about $75 - $95 for the switch.

I need wiring connection details neutral safety switch. for Kia Sportage 2000 model two wheel drive automatic transmission.

The "neutral safety switch" has been incorporated into the more sophisticated "range switch" on modern vehicles. A range switch detects any selected shift lever position (not just park/neutral) and reports that information to the transmission control module (TCM). There are seven wires in the range switch connector on a 2000 Kia Sportage. Power is supplied to the switch from METER Fuse (10A) via a green/red wire. The remaining six wires correspond with each gear position; Park (P), Reverse (R), Neutral (N), Drive (D), 2nd (2), and Low (L). All of these gear position wires run to the TCM as well as the Instrument Cluster. The wire colors are as follows; P = blue/green, R = green, N = blue, D = blue/white, 2 - blue/white, and L = white/red. When car is stopped in drive it makes a rattling noise really loudly.

The rattle is caused because the rpm is lower. When stopped in drive with one foot on the brake, press the throttle down slowly until the vibration stops and the noise goes away. Cause? Weak or bad motor mounts, loose bolts or parts.

A loud noise around the area of the timing belt cover at regular idle. Disappears when driving, then reappears when at idle again.

Dear SIr,
As you saying noise wont come in driving and only comes in idle , it means noise will not come if RPM is high by norma in idle l, try this one start the car don't drive it just raise RPM(rotation per minute of only engine not vehicle speed) in neutral gear , if noise disappear that mean it a problem of drive belt . If drive belt is got less tension then also it can occur or belt is damage, replace belt problem will solve, (for reference drive belt it drive alternator, powersteering pump,A/C compressor that is made by rubber). Thanks if any problem ask me.
