The "gearbox default" message has come on and off several times in the last week. Now the check engine icon has come on . I don't notice any change in the running of the car. It's a 2003 S type with 40,000 miles. Do I need to get it in to a garage immediately? Is it dangerous to be driving it? I don't want to cause any more damage. This is the first problem that I've had other than the brakes failing at 20,000 miles. I took it to the dealership to have them fixed and they charged me $1200. Since I'm no longer covered by warranty, I'd like to take it somewhere besides the dealership. Any recommendations for Portland, Oregon? Thanks for any help!

discoonect the battery, turn the key 5-6 times to start then re connect battery. This will reset the computer and could reset the fault

unfortunately when that code, and that gear box fault light comes on, its pretty much game over for the transmission. It only a matter of time before performance of the transmission gets worse and worse. BUT that transmission is VERY easy to replace, i would check out a few trustworthy independent shops to give you a better price! I am usually a die-hard dealership, having been working at this jaguar land rover dealership for the last 2 years, but you are pretty much for sure going to be a cheaper price on the labor and like i said it is a pretty easy task.
My only precaution MAKE SURE IF YOU GETTING A USED TRANSMISSION THAT YOU GET SOME TYPE OF WARRANTY ON IT. Too many times have I seen customers loose thousands of dollars paying someone to put a used engine or transmission and have it fail almost right away.

Check under the driver side fuse box which below left of the steering wheel if there is any dampness then it s screwing the ecu, this could be due to a seal leak in the window or holes near the axle.ALso the transmission needs fluid to be change as most jag trans fluid need replacing before 75k, clearing the codes will clear the engine light which also improve the cars shifting.

PCV hose. I had the same problem...Hear air escaping from mine..I just put some hose tape over mine, and when I got the cruise not available and check engine again, sure enough..tape was coming off...replace the hose..problem solved.

Possible but not probable, Restricted converters will usually set a cat cod and check engine light will come on. I dont see a gearbox light on fault light on instrument panel
