How do I get the interior lights to come on when the door is opened

Do you have electric locks in the vehicle? One test to do is turn on the car's headlights and open the door. You should hear a chime when you open the driver door. One other thing is to unlock the doors with the remote if you have a remote open the driver door, get in the car but don't put the key in the ignition. The doors might relock after 15-20 seconds. This proves that the door signal open is not being processed. Just tell me what model VW and what year and if you have electric locks and I'll help you.

You need to check ALL the door switches that make the light come on....chances are ONE of them is defective. When you open ANY of those doors, all you are really doing is connecting a ground to that light, but if one of them is not working, it doesn't matter how many doors you have open, it won't ever come on...
Depending on how difficult it is to disassemble each door post switch, it might be possible to bypass all the switches and then put each one back into the system individually until you find the culprit. You also need to run a long jumper wire to the negative side of the bulb and make sure it is a known good bulb and a good socket FIRST!

a door ajar switch is the problem. It's not hard to fix just a little tricky. you can do either do 2 things get it scanned and it shoule tell you what door switch is giving the problem. or save some money and one by on unplug the switches and jump the switch until the light goes out....and then changes that switch

The drivers side door latch is bad. Just replaced one in my daughters 99 beetle. $184 dealer part. same thing no lights then alarm will mgo off for no reason, lights will come on at random times while driving, no chime when key is in.
