You have no clue of the complexity of these systems , controlled by the TIPM - totally integrated power module . Your best bet would be to take it to the dealer . Recall on TIPM . You do not have the knowlede to fix this .

SOURCE: Need fuse schematic
if the fuse was blown the stop lights on both sides would be inop, also if the stop light circuit were dead u would be unable to get the trans out of park, use a 12 volt test light and test the brake light switch at the top of the brake pedal, u can buy a test light from Autozone, kragen and others for about $5 US. If the system has power cjheck the bulb socket it may be defective, use the 12 volt test light while someone pushes the brake pedal. let me know what u find and i will give u further assistance as ness.

Check for a bad socket assembly. Look for burnt retainers inside the socket.

Hello.
This sounds like you have a bad ground on your Dakota. Trace the wires back until you see that one of the wires is connected to the body or frame with a small screw or small bolt. Make sure that your have a good clean ground to work with.
Another thing that you can check for is to see if there is another light out somewhere else on the truck. Its like christmas lights, when one bulb goes, it can effect all the others just as well. The only other option is to check your fuses, get the fuse diagram and see what controls the taillights. On my truck I have the wrong fuse in there cause only the taillights to work and not the brake lights. Vehicles are very picky with there fuses. If the correct fuse is in there, make sure that the fuse isnt burnt out. You can check that by seeing if the filament in there looks burn or is broken like it popped. Hope this helps!

The lens covers dont come off. You can access the bulb from inside the trunk. By opening the panels
SOURCE: rear tail lights not working
If both tail lights are not working it is likely to be a fuse or bad connection under the hood or a connector at the back see if you can trace the wires to a connector and see if it is dirlty or corroded.
