Head gasket i would suspect on a vehicle of this age ,both oil and water are being drawn into the cylinder ,which one ? i suspect no1 look at the plugs this will give a very indication .All head gaskets fail after 6/7 yrs of age on nearly all cars

Testimonial: "Thanks for your reply but the compressions are all good and similar, you say check plugs I presume you mean glow plugs as it a diesel. There is no coolant loss either, how can I tell if its burning oil or its fuel related?"

SOURCE: thick white smoke coming from exhaust

I would think this will be a blown turbo.

These are fed by a small oil pipe and if the unit overheats (due to wear) - this oil fill feed directly into either the inlet manifold - or the outlet - exhaust.
If it is spilling oil into the hot exhaust - you will get a thick white fog. You can confirm this by placing a clear glass bottle or jar in the exhaust stream - and see if it gets a thick coating of oil on it. If it evaporates - it's water, if not - or feels oily - new turbo or overhaul.

Best get is sortd sooner rather than later - as you may be able to save most of it for an overhaul rather than scrap it if badly worn.

SOURCE: 2000 TDI - Lots of white smoke at cold start.

Sounds like your injection pump timing is off, an injector is leaking or a bad seal on your IP.
VW dealers have a horrible reputation when it comes to TDI's. Check out the posts over at www.tdiclub.com Those guys are very knowledgeable - and the first thing they'll tell you is don't take it to a dealer.
You can probably find someone in your area that has a copy of Vag-Com (scantool software that vw uses) software that could look at your timing. It definitely sounds like your dealer was throwing parts at your car because they didn't know what your problem is. If I were you, I'd copy and paste your post from here over at www.tdiclub.com

2011 Saab 9-5 Turbo 4. Does anyone have a clear vacuum hose diagram for a 2011 Saab 9-5?

It appears to be a known issue.
Blue smoke is oil.
White smoke is water.
Black smoke is rich mixture.

Blue smoke is probably from the turbo bearings.

White smoke from engine on Start up

Sounds like the turbo. Have you ever changed the turbo? If not, I would bet on that. If you've changed it but have more than 60-80k miles on it, same.

Audi q7 black smoke coming out of exhaust

The reason my audi q7 had heavy smoke was because the diesel fuel injectors were dripping which can be checked by means of a leak test, this was caused by the fuel injection pump depositing micro shreads of metal in to the injectors, 5 of which failed.
If you're problem is the same, you will find that the problem occurs when the engine is hot, when the engine has been ticking over for a short period and then you hit the accelerator the heavy smoke is the excess fuel burning off, equally if the idle period is longer you will notice smoke in you're rear view mirror. Audi are well aware of the common engine faults, proof being in the 3 years or 60000 mile warranty, the only top motor brand that don't offer 3 years unlimited ( Bmw, Merc, lexus, hell kia & hyundi have more confidence), you may think I have been unlucky and landed a bad one, I bought a second one as i thought the same which low and behold i had full injector replacement and £1800 turbo fault. each car developed the faults between 63000 & 77000 miles, if you buy a second hand diesel audi with a 3.0 engine or above you are buying the name not reliability which is proof when you look up audi's on autotrader, there isn't many with more than 150000 miles, the same can't be said about BMW & MERC which have there cars with 250000 plus.

Exhaust smoke definitely not steam. Someone opined that it may be related to the turbo/exhaust system. What do you think?

A worn turbo or broken would create smoke. Blue or Gray smoke is either worn rings or a clogged PCV. White smoke is from foreign fluid entering the engine. Typically indicative of a head gasket leak. Black smoke is Leaking injectors or an ignition problem or an issue with the turbo.
If you are experiencing a loss in power then you most likely have a worn turbo bearing.

BLUE SMOKE FROM AUDI RS6 ON DE ACCELERATION AND START UP THINK OIL STEM SEALS ARE LETTING OIL THROUGH. CAR RUNS FINE I THINK, AND EXCESSIVE BUILD UP OF OIL IN DRIVER SIDE TURBO PIPE, 62000 MILES WITH A...

General rules of thumb: Low speed engine on acceleration with smoke in the exhaust plume = worn piston rings High speed engine accelerating (spooled up turbo) with smoke = oil form turbo bearing and/or piston rings Engine on over run (coasting down, foot off the gas) with smoke = oil from valve guides. VW/Audi make good engines with tight tolerances so none of the above should apply at 62K miles; just make sure that the oil (the right oil) and oil filter are changed regularly.

Hi. We are again having problems. The car engine smokes first thing in the morning. It is White smoke and smells like engine oil. It only lasts maybe 10-15 mins then there is no more smoke. It seems to be...

White smoke is usually coolant, oil is usually a blue color, most turbos r cooled by coolant so U may have a coolant leak in the turbo, may B a seal or crack in the turbo. Check your coolant level occasionally to C if it drops.
