Did your Check Engine or Service Engine Soon light come on? If so, did you read the code stored in the ECM? If so, what was (were) the code(s). It's unlikely that the ECM and BCM would both completely fail at the same time. More info please.
Check Engine light was on. The dealer said that they were not able to pull the codes. They claim that they tested all three of the compnents mentioned and said that they were bad. When I took it to my personal mechanic, he said that the key was not getting a signal that I needed to take the car to the dealer.
The plot thickens...by any chance, has the car been modified electrically (aftermarket stereo, security system, etc.) If so, did the problem occur soon after the modification? Or...has the car been involved in a front end or side accident? Problems as large as this do not normally occur spontaneously. Has there been any routine service or maintenance performed recently?
The car does have an aftermarket remote starter on it, however it was on it when I purchased it almost two years ago. And for service, about three months prior to this problem, the altenator was replaced.
Oh and when the problem first started, the fuel pump and spark plugs were changed out.
Fuel pump and spark plugs are unlikely causes. The remote starter...that would be the first place I'd look. Sometimes the installers of aftermarket electronic devices aren't as careful with wiring connections and routing. I'd suspect that a wire (usually a "hot" wire) has become chafed and has shorted out against a "ground" somewhere. If you're not overly dependent on the remote starter system, I'd advise you to have a reliable automotive electrical/electronics technician disconnect or remove the remote starter system and its wiring. That may correct the problem, or the system's malfunction, indeed, may have "fried" the ECM and BCM. Sorry, I wish I had some encouragement or solutions for your problem. Good luck.
so I got my car back yesterday from the dealer. Before they made the repairs the service advisor, different one from the first time, had the master tech look at it. So the solution was the immobilizer and a connector was broken behind the ignition. I didn't need the ecm or bcm. The first service advisor was either trying to rip me off or shooting from the hip.
