When you say, hard start, are you saying it cranks good but won't start? If so, have a helper crank it while you visually check for spark at the plugs, if spark everywhere, use a gage and check proper fuel pressure. Also, check fuel injector pulse. Crank the starter intermittently, so it doesn't overheat.
Any applicable trouble codes?
As far as you dash lites, you may have to check ignition switch.

When you turn the key, you should hear the fuel pump make a whiring noise as it dispenses the fuel. If there is no noise. the fuel pump is not working.

Have you checked the fuel shutoff inertia switch.?
Check your owners manual for location.

SOURCE: 99 cavalier battery light comes on but new battery....

it sounds to me like it could be the alternator im afraid but the only real cheap way to tell is time. if you continue to drive this and keep a check on wether it still starts or lights dim, with it being a new battery it is going to take a while fot it to go flat. if it does then try not to drive it too much as this will break it and cost you even more.

check the wire from the battery to the starter to see if it has good connection. otherwise check your ground to block.

How can he forget? two different size post (terminals) on the solenoid ,one large & one small . It should be self explanatory. What relay switch ? No relay for the starter on that vehicle. Your best, have a qualified repair shop check it.

yes it could. If the alternator is bad your battery light should come on while running.when u replaced the battery it should have ran good for a minute till the alternator started draining draining your battery. Then the battery light would come on.I would replace it or have it checked. You can check it by starting it up and keep any elelectric off radio, lights, ect.then disconnect the battery if the car stalls its the alternator.the car would stay running with good alternator

It sounds like you hit the nail right on the head. If your battery has a good charge then the problem is either your starter or your solenoid. However you cant really replace just the solenoid now a days because they started making the starter and solenoid all as one piece quite a while back. If you replace the starter it should solve your problem. I hope this helps you out.

If the starter makes a click that means that you have current to the starter relay (selenoid) you can replace the starter relay but most of the time are the copper contacts inside that close the circuit to energize the starter foward to start spinning. The contacts are burn bu used

bad connection at battery? you are too vague with the symptoms. what does "popped" mean? Does the engine "spin over" or not. If i does not "spin over" and the battery is good, and the connections are tight, when holding the key ion the start position, have someone tap on the housing of the starter, it it starts (spins over), replace the starter.
