Question about 1995 Chevrolet Astro

1 Answer

1995 astro m van. idle is good until driven a bit, fully warm. when coming to a stop, idle surges up for a few seconds, cuts out like it wants to die, recovers and idles up again. this repeats while stopped for 15 t 20 seconds, progressively getting lower until normal idle returns. IAC counts are 150 at surge, 38 at normal idle. watching scan data, IAC counts go up, engine "cuts out" (IAC counts drop to 5-8 actually) then engine recovers (IAC counts go up...150, then lower and lower until idle settles) Vehicle has new EGR, PROM (for EGR carbon problem) and IAC. No codes, all data normal. Ignition timing TDC.

Have you checked for any vacuum leaks? If the vehicle has higher mileage then a fuel system cleaning maybe required.

SOURCE: Check engine light comes on.

Mine was doing that also.. We changed the two EGR valves, changed spark plugs and wires, and finally cleaned the Mass Air flow Sensor with carburetor cleaner. That seemed to helped the most. You have to take the sensor off to do it.. you can find a youtube video that explains it. Now all I have to do is figure out why my car's RPM's surge when slowing down.

Well, the computer is supposed to open the IAC to keep the RPM above 600 or so depending on the load on the engine.
If you have voltage and ground for the IAC it should raise idle speed to at least 1100 when you first start the engine cold.
If that is not happening, I would look for carbon build up in the throttle body. You can apply voltage to the IAC and open it to see if the air passage is open too.

Rough idle 95 astro van, I did a full tune up , plugs, wires, cap, rotor, air filter, and fuel filter and cleaned egr vavle.

I actually had to replace my EGR valve and the gasket. I clean the valve well and reused both. I don't think the gasket sealed well enough though. So I went ahead and got a new valve, gasket and changed them. It runs a lot smoother now.

Transmission shifts hard into second gear(auto trans). However, when shutting engine off and restarting, the hard shift will go away. It will come back in a few days. Doesn't seem to matter how many...

it may be a bad tps ( throttle position sensor ). it causes transmission shift issues, bucking, jerking, idle surging, engine cut off, surge while crusing down highway. if this does not solve problem, it may be a sticking valve body in transmission. have a good day !! for an automatic tranny.

Fast idle astro van

Check the base plate gasket under the throttle body, some time the gasket start to leak, and will cause a high idle, if possible with engine running get some water and pore it at the base of the throttle bode, you will hear a suction sound, that's the gasket, replace it.
