After recently buying a 1991 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, Diesel Turbo LE Automatic, Stationwagon it started giving me the following problems: 1. Just cranked but couldnt start (kick-start) the engine. 2. My mechanic identified the problem to be on the original automatic fuel pump (lack of diesel flow) which was replaced with a manual one since we couldnt get the automatic one. 3. Overheating followed after cracks were found on the cylinder-head when he eventually started the car. 4. I bought a new cylinder-head and gasket and my mechanic reassembled the engine and handed me over the car 5. But the car's peformance has been poor, especially on picking from a stationary position (no power). Goes up to speeds of only 80-100 kms. 6. It's got a very high fuel consuption. 7. Dicharges high gas emissions (lots of smokes from exhaust). 8. Consumes lots of diesel oil.
I would suggest to have the pump timing reset and probably have a diesel specialist to check the pump as well. It is very difficult to give extra help over the net as most of the things have been covered by the mechanic I supposed. But as per your description I think the pump may have not been timed properly or it may need overhauling as well.
Cheers
