The same relay won't be doing the turn signals and the brake lights. The most obvious thing apart from bulbs is the brake light switch, which is easy to test with a multimeter.
There isn't a relay on a brake light, just a simple switch on the pedal or a pressure operated switch on the master cylinder. A relay is a device that use a small electrical signal to open and close contacts that carry a large current (amps)
brake light dont have relay only fuse brakes are hot at all times on gms. in goes from fuse to brake pedal switch to hazard turn signal switch then to brake lights. ck fuse if good go to pedal switch if good go to turn /hazard switch the turn signal hazard brake all use same wire to lamps.
No, the switch is above the brake pedal and the relay is under the hood. The problem can be either one. First pull the connector off the brake switch--there may be more than one connector, but pull them all off. If the brakes lights go out, replace the switch. If they dont, replace the relay. I guarantee the lights will go out if you pull the relay out. If the relay clicks when you push it back in, it's because the brake switch is shorted on. If the relay doesn't click, the relay is shorted on.
Check brake light switch above brake pedal. Pull the connector off the switch. If the lights go out, replace the switch. If not, try pulling the brake pedal relay out of it's socket. The lights should go out. Take out another similar relay and push it in the stop light relay socket. If this fixes the problem, buy a new relay.
Try this possibilities to locate the fault.
First get your voltmeter or 12v test lamp out. Check the 30 amp Brake (#2) maxi fuse in the under hood junction box.Fuse should have 12v at both sides at all times. If okay proceed. Go to the brake light switch. The orange wire should have 12v at all times. The white wire should have 12v when stepping on the brake. If okay, proceed. Next thing is the brake lamp relay in the underhood fuse box. Swap the relay with one that looks just like it and recheck the brake light operation. If the relay is no good replace it. If the relay is swapped and still not working, see if you can feel the relay clicking when someone else steps on the brake pedal. batt is power from the maxi fuse 12v all times sls is the white wire from the brake switch 12v with brake applied. gnd is body ground 0v all times mfs goes to the multi function switch 12v with relay activated the circuit is simple—power from the brake light switch white wires turns on the relay which then sends power back to the multifunction switch for distribution to the rear lights. if you jump terminals batt and mfs the brake lights should come on. If you have no power at terminal sls with the brake applied then you have a wiring fault white wire between the brake light switch and the relay Thanks. Keep updated for any more query. Well, have you checked the fuse? Maybe stick another one (of the same size) in there anyway. If that's ok, then check the stop light switch. It'll be somewhere along the brake pedal linkage/ arm under the dash or under the hood around the linkage or master cylinder. Look around. You can short across the wires temporarily to see if they light up and then you'll know if that's it.
My 2001 S60 just had the same issue. The "check brake light" error message on the dash and the brake lights not illuminating ( the upper center glass brake light would). I found that both bulbs had failed which I replaced. The fuse was okay but still the error message was found on the dash when the brake peddle was pressed. I purchasing a dealer $30.00 brake light relay and the problem is fixed. However, there isn't a diagram anywhere that shows which relay was for the brake light relay. In my 2001 S60, the relay is in the trunk, beneath the driver side removable upholstered cover. The relay panel has ~ 10ea of the same relays and a few other odd sizes. There is a vertical column of relays on the left and right. I found the brake light relay is located between two other relays on the upper right column. It was difficult to reach due to a larger relay on it’s right.
