Rewiring entire 1971 el camino interior and under the hood

Check Fuses 1, 3, and 10. Make sure all your connectors are clean.

The clock is fuse 16.

It can only be a faulty switch. See the two spade connectors here? Remove your connector and put two wires direct to the battery. If it stops and starts as normal when you make and break the connection, it proves it is the switch that is faulty.

their are a multitude of places that deal with oem to reproduction parts their are also a lot of forums / and car clubs to pick their brains from this link has a lot of different interior parts for el caminos this is just to show what some of the shops are like and the other link is the break down for original codes for the 86 paint interior/exterior trim trim color ect

I'm doing that job right now on a 1971 El Camino. Takes me about 5 hours, start to finish.

Check The Mega Fuse In The Fuse Distribution box under the hood !! other wise use a VOM Check amps of battery output of alternator running and all accessories running !! Otherwise Check cables for shorts and wiring harness at well !!

The door jab switch in the doors are the more likely problem,there are two,but the driver side is most likely the problem.

should be on the right rear of the engine compartment towards the firewall.

If it's advice you want:
If you are not buying an after market harness and all of the oem wiring is intact replace one wire at a time from the component all the way back to the fuse box. Its tedious but, it's a sure fire way to get it right the first time.

Secondly, I'd by a haynes manual or some other wiring diagram. Study it for at least a couple weeks or until you are completely comfortable taking on the task.

Color code your wires and label both the old and new ones with paper tape and a permanent marker so that you know what each one is for.

Last but not least, make sure that the battery is disconnected... ;o)

Yes. GM made all Chevrolet El Camino's and GMC Caballero's excactly the same, save for badge and trim packages. You can interchange parts with El Camino/Malibu/Monte Carlo cars and some S-10 trim peices will fit. But all three Cars will interchange interior parts. as for the bumpers, Only El camino/Malibu/Caballero will fit without modifying them. A simple Bolt-On and go.
