Cannot open my tailgate

If you remove the plastic trim piece around the handle you should be able to reach the metal rods that connect to the latch.

door handle broke depends on what door handle it is.if door cant be open on out side out side door handle broke.if cant open door on inside inside door handle broke.door handle clip that connects to latch rod broken.when you try open door handle not engage to latch rod.door not going open.have to replace door handle with new clip holds latch rod in place.

Hello. Yes that is exactly what you need to do. Once the screws are out you can pull the handle assembly out just enough to disconnect it from the latch release rods. Not too far, you don't want to bend the rods.Those little connectors you see just unsnap from the rods, then they swing away so you can pull the rod out of where it connects to the handle mechanism. Have a piece of wire handy to hook the rod so it doesn't fall out of reach, but even if it does it won't go far. I'm enclosing a picture of a typical "swing away" connector so you can see how it unsnaps from the rod. I think yours will be green and blue, so remember which is which, one goes on the right and one on the left

i would try to force a long thin screwdriver between the tailgate and the truckbed to try to push in the latches. if you cant get it, a body shop might be able to help.

open the tail gate remove the inside pannel and remove the handle by removing ( might be riveted in) mounting bolts and plastic or metal linkage clips reverse th steps to assemble , if rivet is used drill out the center of the rivets

replace handle on a 05 avalanche 1500

Check your local auto parts junk yard and locate a similar truck that was wrecked on its side or front and get the parts off of that vehicle taking notes on how it is installed. That might be cheaper than a body shop.

sounds like the tumbler is bad, try to replace it yourself , if you have an electronic chip in your key you have to go to dealer to get it installed. cheapest way to fix this is order a new locking tailgate handle from jc whitney or somewere and replace the whole thing.

I have the solution to every one out there with tailgate lock problems......I had the very same problem but wasnt interested in getting a power lock.......Here goes.....it costs you some wd40 or liquid wrench.....nothing else......open the tail gate.....you will see the screws that hold the handle in place.....take off the two outer screws only....then pop off the handle cover....yes it does come off without breaking.....you will see something shaped like a "C".....it should move back and forth.....with the tailgate closed you should be able to move that "C" back and forth...it swivels on a pivot you can see in the opening above the tailgate handle.......this is the lock mechanism.....mine was seized up.....anyways......with the tailgate still closed squirt some wd40 or liquid wrench in the area directly above the tailgate handle........that "C" thing will move again and your problem is over...email me if you figured it out........
