My radiator fan does not work under any conditions, all fuses ok, wondering which relay is it to check conditions, thanks

  • sergiohawaii Apr 27, 2009

thank you for the hints, problem was the relay. working fine now. If anyone wondering which one is it, on my car was the first relay (4 total (starting from passenger side), if different position than mine, the relay is the one with black/purple wire, same color as on the radiator fan motor. just follow the wire to the relay

Here are the cooling system diagnostic steps...First does the cooling fan kick on (with engine hot)? If not, check the fuse, if good then check the thermoswitch in the radiator (it's about an inch and a half in diameter located on the lower part of the radiator with two wires ) by disconnecting the wires and touching them together (again, with engine hot...at least 190 degrees) if the fan comes on, you have a bad switch. If not connect a 10 gauge jumper wire from the battery to the fan itself (there are three terminals,,, one high, one low and ground). With power direct from the battery (and a ground wire, if necessary) fan should run... if not replace the fan assembly... if it does run then you have a bad cooling fan relay. It will be located above the fuses on the fuse block... Hope this helps...;-)

I have a 1999 Olds Alero/ I am wondering if there is a fuse for the cooling fan and or the air conditioning fan.

yes. there is a fuse and a relay for the cooling fans and the a/c compressor. you will need to check the power box under the hood that is where most of the relays and there fuses are located.

Have two codes 1490 and 1489 what are they and how do i fix them

It's most likely low speed fan control relay circuit trouble.
There are separate relays and control circuits for high and low speed for the fans. This way if one messes up the other one should still work. Relays are in relay/fuse block under the hood. There is a diagram under the relay box cover that shows the function of each relay. The relays just plug in.

1489 = High Speed Fan CTRL Relay Circuit - An open or shorted condition detected in the control
circuit of the high speed radiator fan control relay.

1490 = Low Speed Fan CTRL Relay Circuit - An open or shorted condition detected in control circuit of
the low speed radiator fan control relay.

Either the relays are gone or the connector isn't plugged in, probably the connector if both the low and high circuit is out.

Radiator fans won't come on. Fuse ok

If fuse is ok, check the relay fuse box under the hood to see if relay isn't short. Try to rotate with another relay of the same specs. If it works, then your relay is bad, if it still doesn't work, we can assume your radiator fan motor is bad, and the fan needs replacement. You can test to make sure it is the fan motor by unplugging the wiring harness to your fan, then test it with a 12v battery via the postive and negative terminals. If you get nothing then, it is definitly your fan, if not, could be a temperature sensor.

Engine cooling fans are not working

You can check if the fans are working by turning on you Air conditioning. They should run constantly with the A/C on.
Also bear in mind that the fans do not normally come on until the coolant temperature hits around 225-228 degrees.

Engine fan does not turn on

Look on the radiator for a switch (Physically screwed into the radiator) with 2 terminals on it.

Pull them off and short them together with a piece of wire. (Jumper) If the fan runs your thermostatic switch is bad.

The switch is a real common failure.

If the fan does not run... check the fuses.

If fuses are ok then check the fan winding for resitance with an Ohm meter.
No resistance = burned out fan motor

Overheating

open your owners manual and locate bot the fan fuse and the fan relay. Check the fuse if its good, just replace the relay, theyre pretty cheap. if that doesn't work spring for a new fan

Radiator fan

You should check the 30 amp "RDI" fuse and the 7.5 ECU-IG fuse. Both fuses are critical to the operation of the fan system. The RDI fuse sends power to the fan #1 relay. The A/C amplifier turns on power to the fan #1 relay, this is why your fan works on A/C.

Now, with no cooling fan under "normal conditions" (A/C off), you need to have a good fan #2 relay, and a good water temp switch. This switch is on the engine, near the thermostat housing (I think); with a single plug, with a white with a blue trace wire going to it. Remove this wire from the sender, and jump it to ground (anywhere on the metal of the engine) with the key on (engine OFF). If the fan starts, you need a new water temp sending unit. If not, then consider a new fan #2 relay. This system is pretty simple.
