Could be a bad ignition lock cylinder, or could be the cable that goes from the shift lever to the steering column. If key won't turn at all it's probably the lock cylinder. If it turns forward but not back all the way the probably the cable. Hope that helps.

SOURCE: 1998 Wranger Ignition Key Stuck / Steering Column Locked

I have had this same problem on 4 of my Jeeps. A locksmith provided me with two answers.
This key thing happens to me at least once a week.
It is a common problem with Jeeps. 1998 Wrangler, 2007 Cherokee and two 2000 Cherokees all had the issue.

1. Replace the tumbler assembly. $150. USD (Not!)
2. Place the key in the ignition, smartly impact the key on the **** end, end that is sticking out of the ignition. (Harder is not better) strike straight on as to not break the key off. 4 or 5 strikes should fix the problem every time.

FYI - flooding the switch with WD-40 will not fix the issue, it is a tumbler problem.

SOURCE: replacing ignition switch in 2001 chevy silverado

Not the igniton switch, its the ingition cylinder and or the housing. The switch is not part of what you are really turning. It's connected to it via gears. The common problem is the key gets worn out and the tumblers wear also. Eventualy they do not line up right and will not make the "bar" drop in the cylinder to allow it to turn from the off positon. If you have the title in your name and the key has never been rekeyed or the code has been changed you can go down to a dealership with all of the info for the truck and they can cut you a key from the vin number. You can try that first before you put a cylinder and housing in it.

Testimonial: "I really appreciate this info it makes sense and hopefully this solves the problem. it gets really annoying not being able to start the truci"

The ignition key will not turn in my 1999 Ford Ranger. Drove to work, shut the truck off, everything fine. Went to leave later and key first of all wouldn't go in all the way. Finally it went in but will...

To remove the cylinder from the column. First disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. Now put the key in the ignition. Look under the plastic covering on the column and you will see a small hole. With something small, pointed and strong, like an ice pick, insert the pick into the hole and push the button on the lock cylinder in hard while pulling the cylinder with the key in it out of the column. To install the new lock cylinder make sure the key is in it and just line up the groove on the cylinder with the groove in the column and push it in. It will lock in place. try to cycle the new cylinder if all is good then the old tumblers were frozen or broken. Now if it has the same problem then the ignition switch at the lower end of the column is broken and will need replaced. If so just tell me and I can guide you thru that also.

Locked Ignition but steering wheel free

Push gear selector up past park and it should loosen up, or press hard on the brake pedal. Shifter up past park usually loosens it up. Common GM problem.

Key won't go into the ignition

This is exactly what happened to my truck last night. The steering wheel moves freely. I had a hard time putting the key in the ignitition. The ignition will not turn. Neither will the shifter. It seems like it is not in park but then how did the key come out? My car is a 2004 Chevy 2500HD. Did you even get a solution to your issue?

My key is stuck in my ignition

your problem is a solenoid Worth about 500 bucks in your steering column there is a small cover on the bottom of your steering column take this cover off and stick a pen up inside to push the button in this will release your key. a permanent solution is to jam something inside to hold the button in all the time. it wont hurt anything i've had mine like this for over a year
