96 Ford Mustang GT convertible top doesn't work.

My 1996 Ford Mustang GT convertible top doesn't work. There is no sound when I press the switch. Hopefully a fuse or something simple. I can not find anything in my Chilton Repair manual about the convertible top electrical system. How would I trouble shoot it? Or where can I find a guide on how to troubleshoot it?

I figured it out. In case anyone is interested. By removing the center
console (actually just removing console glove box), I was able to get
to the convertible top switch, which turned out was cracked and no
longer made contact. Turns out I need a new switch.

The parking brake must be engaged before the top will work. Hope this helps.

What exactly is it doing or not doing for that matter. Check vacuum lines going to the unit and see if you have any broken hoses. I'll try to get a schematic to you. It's best if you give me your email address so I can send it to you.

if your vehicle does have a cut off switch it would be located in the trunk behind the trunk lining on either rear wheel fender well. also not only is there a relay for the fuel pump but also a fuse as well. make sure the 10 amp fuse(red) is still good. it should be in either the power distribution box under the hood or the fuse block under the dash on the drivers side..also there might be a junction box underneath the vehicle where there is a connection loose. if all else fails check the main wire harness leading from distribution box .

The turn signal switch and wiper switch are one unit called a Combo switch. The good news is it is easily changed. After opening the column covers it is held to the side of the column with two torque head screws. You don't have to remove the steering wheel.

Testimonial: "Thanks! I'll try to find the part # for that combo switch and try it before storing the car for winter :("

My convertible top on my mustang gt wont go up or down

Check to see if the top motor is running when you press the top up switch. Car has to be in park with emergency brake engaged. If motor runs but top will not move or binds then one or both of the lift cylinders are bad. Usually there will be hydraulic fluid leaking from the cylinders if one or both will not hold pressure. Replace cylinders if bad. The top could probably be manually closed if the lift cylinder arms are detached from the top frame.
If motor does not run when the switch is pressed then check your fuses, the switch and the connector at the top motor to see if it is getting power.

My 98 ford mustang is stuck in park

check fuses for brake shift solenoid. the brake pedal position switch is a fuse under the hood. inside the passenger compartment, check every fuse. that's a start for not having more information.

96 mustang gt ac blows fuse after 5 minutes. Replaced field coil. Jumped low pressure switch. Blows 10 amp fuse in 2 minutes, 15 amp fuse in 5 minutes

it sounds to me like a AC resistor issue i have a beemer that did that same thing to me and it turn out that it was my ac resistor it would burn out my 30 amp ac fuse in 2 to 3 minutes usually when the resistors in a circuit break they tend to burn out the fuses as a warning. easy way to find out is by putting in a new fuse and after a minute go touch the negative lead on you battery if the cable is really hot then there's a short in the circuit or in the case of your ac it would be a broken resistor.

Need to know how to put the top down on 96 mustang dont have manu

First thing to do is put the car in park and then set the parking brake. Next, release the drivers and passenger side handles (located at the top, above your head when you are sitting in the car, where the part of the top meets the windshield) Both handles are black and you simply pull the lever to release the hooks. After both hooks are released, push the button located near the speedometer (should be underneath the speedometer) on the dash and the top motor will engage and begain to retract the top. Hold the button untill the top disapears behing the back seat
