You do not say what design 3 series; but for E36 with electric seat adjustment, Odometer Gears (link below), makes replacement gears for the electric seats for approximately $40 each. This is the part that typically wears/breaks for seat reclining. its a bit fidly , ther is a screw under the plastick trim on the gear knob its self and then it should fall apart from ther .. you should be able to get a new one cheep from bmw . or fix yor self as all it will be is the spring has gone . sorry i cant be a bit more help but its hard to explain , but easy .
