Saturn sl1 dohc

I have a 92 saturn 1.9 DOHC. Engine will crank and turn over but will not start. If I remove the #1 plug wire from spark plug and place it against the engine block it will start. What would cause this condition.

    plugs are in good condition. I can spray stater fluid in the TB with all plugs connected. It will start but will not stay started. I also hear a clicking sound coming from the solendoid on the stater as it turns. any suggestions.

It starts when you remove the #1 plug wire from the plug? The spark plug might be defective somehow and shorting out the ignition.

Testimonial: "Plugs have been replaced and all emission sensors are with in parameters. I can have the plug wires connected and if I spray gas or started fluid in the TB the car will start but will not stay started."

well there is usually an easy way to tell....pop the hood and look on teh intake manifold usually it will say and should say 2.0L dohc or sohc ill check my resources and let you know if it doesnt tell you....let me know :)

make sure its full block dual over head cam (DOHC) it shoud fit. 97 to 99 its the same as far as i know. cause i replaced a 99 with a 97.

very strange and rare problem. something is keping the injectors open instead of pulsing them. The command to ground the injectors comes from the PCM, Powertrain Control Module. It may be a good idea to pick up a used one from a salvage yard. car-part.com is a good place to look. You will need the info off your module to match up.
Do you have 2.0L SPI engine or 2.0L Zetec engine?

Mechanical Returnless Fuel System The fuel system consists of a fuel tank with reservoir, fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, fuel filter, fuel supply line, fuel rail, fuel rail pulse damper, fuel injectors, and schrader/pressure test point. Operation of the system is as follows (Figure 62):

  1. The fuel delivery system is enabled during crank or running mode once the PCM receives a crankshaft position (CKP) sensor signal.
  1. The fuel pump logic is defined in the fuel system control strategy and is executed by the PCM.
  1. The PCM grounds the fuel pump relay, which provides VPWR to the fuel pump.
  1. The inertia fuel shut-off (IFS) switch is used to de-energize the fuel delivery secondary circuit in the event of collision. The IFS switch is a safety device that should only be reset after a thorough inspection of the vehicle (following a collision).
  1. A pressure test point valve (schrader valve) is located on the fuel rail. This is used to measure fuel injector supply pressure for diagnostic procedures and repairs. ON VEHICLES NOT EQUIPPED WITH A SCHRADER VALVE, USE ROTUNDA FUEL PRESSURE TEST KIT #134—R0087 OR EQUIVALENT.
  1. Located on the fuel rail is a pulse damper. The pulse damper reduces fuel system noise caused by the pulsing of the fuel injectors. The vacuum port located on the damper is connected to manifold vacuum to avoid fuel spillage in the event the pulse damper diaphragm were to rupture (the pulse damper should not be confused with a fuel pressure regulator).
  1. The fuel injector is a solenoid-operated valve that meters the fuel flow to each combustion cylinder. The fuel injector is opened and closed a constant number of times per crankshaft revolution. The amount of fuel is controlled by the length of time the fuel injector is held open. The injector is normally closed and is operated by 12 volt VPWR from the power relay. The ground signal is controlled by the PCM.
  1. There are three filtering or screening devices in the fuel delivery system. The intake sock is a fine, nylon mesh screen mounted on the intake side of the fuel pump. There is a fuel filter screen located at the fuel rail side of the fuel injector. The fuel filter assembly is located between the fuel pump and the pressure test point/schrader valve.
  1. The fuel pump (FP) module contains the fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator and the fuel sender assembly. The fuel pressure regulator is attached to the fuel pump in the fuel pump module located in the fuel tank. It regulates fuel pressure supplied to the fuel injectors. The fuel pressure regulator is a diaphragm-operated relief valve. Fuel pressure is established by a spring preload applied to the diaphragm. Excess fuel is bypassed through the regulator and returned to the fuel tank.

Electronic Returnless Fuel System The fuel system consists of a fuel tank with reservoir, fuel pump, fuel rail pressure sensor, fuel filter, fuel supply line, engine fuel temperature sensor, fuel rail, fuel injectors, and schrader/pressure test point. Operation of the system is as follows (Figure 63) and (Figure 64):

  1. The PCM commands a duty cycle to the fuel pump driver module (FPDM).
  1. The fuel pump driver module modulates the voltage to the fuel pump (FP) to achieve the proper fuel pressure. Voltage for the fuel pump is supplied by the power relay or FPDM power supply relay. (For additional information on FPDM operation, refer to PCM Outputs—Fuel Pump and PCM Inputs—FPM.)
  1. The fuel rail pressure (FRP) sensor provides the PCM with the current fuel rail pressure. The PCM uses this information to vary the duty cycle output to the FPDM to compensate for varying loads.
  1. The engine fuel temperature (EFT) sensor measures current fuel temperatures in the fuel rail. This information is used to vary the fuel pressure and avoid fuel system vaporization.

For old models, Saturn/GM also used the same material fiberglass gasket in your model, you almost certainly have a leak from a crumpled, sucked-in gasket as I suffered (and many others). I would say going to Saturn dealership to make repairs is probably not good idea if they are going to put in the same GM intake gasket part. Maybe possible to specify Felpro gasket with whatever shop you go to if you don't do the repair yourself. I would not go too long with your car in that condition as there is localized leaning at your cyl-3, that could cause a burnt exhaust valve there.

The exhaust is extra hot venting out that cylinder. P0303 is misfire at cyl-3. Mine was P0301 (cyl-1). You may get P0507 once in a while when PCM fails to control the fast idle caused by the leak under certain conditions. Most of the time, it is very slow idle caused by 3 cylinders running. You run smoother in cold idle because the IAC opens up to increase idle and end up lowering the manifold vacuum, so the reduced vacuum causes less leaking at the failing intake manifold gasket.

I'd say try cleaning everything with your ignition before replacement; Idle problems could be caused by engine coolant sensor (ECTS). Are you sure it was changed? Did they put on a new wire connector along with it?

Are you saying the engine will not crank, or not start ?
If you think two of the cylinders are not getting spark, something may have happened to the coil pack or the crank-cam sensors.
If all 4 plug wires are getting spark, two of them may be on the wrong cylinders. The firing order is not always the same as the plug wire layout.

I just got a 99 Saturn SL1 but can't figure out just what engine I have (SOHC or DOHC). Normally on other vehicles I clearly see these letters on the valve cover. Where and what do I look for to...

If your car is a 4 cylinder engine with 4 spark plug holes and plus shows 16 V on top of your engine is 16 Valves that your car would be a DOHC = Dual OverHead Cam. You can also go to your local library to check out this year of car in the chiltons books for free when you have the time. When you tell us here that your car is a 99 Saturn SL1 does not say to much information but the Liter of engine does like 1.9L and so on.

Gentlepersons... have 1992SL1 engine died... gong to replace it ,,, but all involved want to know engine type dual cam? vs ? ... can you tell me how to determine whats in the car now.. vin# nails it...

That is pretty easy. If your Saturn is an SL1 it is single cam if it is an SL2 it is dual cam. That is the only difference between an SL1 and an SL2 - Saturn didn't even bother to put a tag or emblem anywhere on the body to differentiate between the the two models. The 8th digit in the VIN will confirm this for you. If the 8th digit is "7" it is a Dual Overhead Cam (DOHC) engine. If the 8th digit is a "9" then it is a Single Overhead Cam (SOHC) engine. When you have seen both engines, it is pretty obvious by simply looking at them. The DOHC cam cover is much wider and has 2 "humps" with spark plugs and wires going down the center between the humps. The SOHC cam cover is narrow and the plugs and wires go down one side.

Also in the 1992 model year, the DOHC engine was equipped with Multiport Fuel Injection. (MFI) The fuel injectors (4 of them) were located in the top of the intake manifold. The SOHC engine had Throttle Body Injection (TBI) The two injectors were located in the throttle body.

I don't have any pictures of the cam covers, but I have pictures of the cam cover gaskets (AKA Valve Cover Gaskets) you can very easilly see the difference.

On my 92 Saturn SL2 do I haave to remove the cover to repalce spark plugs?

no, the plug wires snap onto the plugs which are in deep recesses in the valve cover on the DOHC, which is the SL2. On this old car you may just want to replace the plug wires at the same time unless you are sure they are less than 5 years old. get some good wires, not generics, that are made for the car.

What's the difference bteween a 99' saturn sl and a saturn sl1? My 99' saturn sl wont go in reverse, what might be wrong with it?

The SL2 is a DOHC 1.9L and the SL1 is a SOHC 1.9L. They have different transmissions, the DOHC uses a 15 inch wheel while the SOHC has a 14 inch wheel. So when you are shopping around for another transmission you must get one from the same type of engine. Saturn auto transmissions seem to be problematic, I stuck with the manual trannys and had very good luck.

I just need to know what size engine comes in a saturn SL1, it's a 1997?

Unless it has been modified it is a 1.9L 4 cylinder, the same engine in all Saturns from 91-99. The only difference is whether or not it is a SOHC or DOHC, meaning single or double overhead cam. Double overhead cam has spark plug sockets in the center of the top of the head and is overall slightly larger than the SOHC engine which has spark plug sockets on the front of the engine. Usually there will be something on the rear bumper like DOHC as well. The engines are nearly identical in all other respects but the transmissions are not the same. If your car has 14 inch wheels most likely you have a SOHC while if your wheels are 15 inch you have a DOHC.

A 1.9 ltr MFI DOHC or a 1.9 ltr TBI SOHC engine was installed in that year Saturn SL1.
