Check for leaks in exhaust ahead of converter, check cap and rotor for tracking between contacts, code check for fuel and other faults.

  • Anonymous Apr 26, 2009

Three things can cause backfire, excess fuel igniting in the exhaust, air leak in exhaust causing normal waste to ignite or spark plug firing when exhaust valve is open (timing fault or bad ignition cap)
Check for codes, examine exhaust system for leaks ahead of the converter. check cap and rotor for tracking between contacts.

1996 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE,4.0L,6CYCL.,2WD,ELETRICAL PROBLEMS THAT MAKES MY TRUCK BACKFIRE SO HARD IT BLOWS MY MUFFLER OPEN LIKE A ALUMINUM CAN,SOMETIMES YOU CAN FEEL ELECTRICITY SHOOT TO THE PASSENGER

There are a couple of things that might cause a backfire and NONE of them have any relation to electricity:
1. Engine timing, the relationship of the CAM and the CRANK shaft. IF a valve is open when the engine cylinder fires then the resulting action is a backfire.
2.Cylinder misfire: There is one cylinder exhausting unfired fuel to the exhaust manifold and if he manifold is hot enough, the fuel mixture ignites.

2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee back fire

Backfiring is caused by unburned fuel igniting in the exhaust system, which could be the header, catalytic converter, muffler or exhaust pipe. Red hot is caused by the burning fuel. You either have a timing issue or you are not getting enough air flow into the fuel injection system, which can happen for several reasons. I would try to find a good local mechanic and pick their brain.

I have a 1997 jeep grand Cherokee limited addition. that Stalls

Hi! I had the exact same problem with my jeep before. The wiring (located on the back wall on passanger side to the left) You will see three sets of plugs with a lot of wires on them. I had to get everyone replaced and the wires rewired and sautered together. My truck would backfire so bad it busted my muffler 3 times!! So, try that and I think it will solve the problem.

I have a 97 jeep cherokee that stalls and backfires and it has backfired to the point where it blew open my muffler. It doesn't backfire all the time, just at times...what can it be?

It's not possible to pinpoint, with just online info, what is causing the backfire, but if it blew your muffler open, the engine is definitely dumping raw fuel into the exhaust. Look into what can cause excessive fuel to be dumped into the exhaust and you may find the cause of your problem.

What is causing my 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited Edition to spit, sputter, lose power and backfire?

Sounds like a timing problem, check timing and if off could be timing chain worn out especially if there is excessive miles(200,000 miles or more)

1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Stalls out, engine quits running

since its a 1997 your jeep has EFI, electronic fuel injection. The most probable reason for your troubles would be the injectors or a problem with the computer controling them, not allowing enough gas to be pushed into the cylinder causing stalling or lack of power, also too much gas iin the cylinder can lead to back firing and stalling. This would also explain the reason it takes so long to start back up some times, all the excess gas in the cylinder is flooding the motor and u have to wait till the gas disipates till the engine will turn over.
