My jeep idles great while in park and neutral, but as soon as I put it in drive the idle drops below normal. It chokes, lurches, backfires and finally dies. It's to the point now where it won't even start, despite the brand new distributor cap, spark plug wires/coils, and starter, about a $300 repair that just took place literally two days ago.

which compression do you mean. Because my fuel compression reads at 40psi which is normal for my vehicle. the problem i see see is that it still back fires and and i now am only got 5 cylindors what should i go since the dealer does not want to fix what i told them what i feel is wrong ( timing ) inside the motor
the key to a proper diagnose. is check all mechanical operation. when i say what is the compression I'm refering to the engine compression. what each cylinder produces in pounds per square inch (PSI) if you are only running on 5 cylinders that 1 cylinder is not working properly, you could have a bad spark plug, spark plug wire or one that is not all the way on, a bad injector or wiring to the injector. a compression test will tell you if you have an absenance of compression or if there is a problem with the valve train, or ring or piston once you have checked the basics you can go on with the minor stuff. if you feel it is the timing do you have a timing light to check the timing. what is the mileage? have you had any major engine work done?
do you have any trouble codes and what is the compression?
