2004 silverado 5.3 liter oil pressure ranges between 20 and 40 what could cause this problem
The pressure to be most concerned with is the reading in gear at idle with engine warmed up...Low end really should not be below 20. If pressure wanders, change the sending unit and check actual pressure with a mechanical gauge if necessary. The age and quality of your oil, as well as temperature all play a part in pressure, as well as internal wear from time & miles of use. If pressure changes with rpm, that is normal. 40psi is good while driving.
need more info just ask.
Here's some extra info: When testing oil pressure, remove the oil sending unit and install an external oil pressure gauge. Oil pump is the first item to get oil and the last item not to get oil during a failure in the engine. Unless the pressure relief becomes plugged with gunk from poor maintenance, (rare) the pump will not fail unless you have another problem such as bearings. If you had a bearing problem you would not have to guess...the engine would loudly tell you!!!
What if its idling at 40 and its between 60 and 80 while driving normal conditions..?
40 @ idle and higher when driving is fine. Means you have a really good oil pump. Old chevy 302 Z28 pumps used to put out that kind of pressure. Only time I'd be concerned, is if it goes much above 80, as many oil filters, especially lower quality ones aren't designed to hold that much pressure.

My 2004 (1500) Silverado appears to be having serious oil pressure issues. When the truck is cold and started, the oil pressure gauge remains at 0 . The valves sound loud as if it is low on oil but after driving the vehicle for a brief period of time, the truck runs normal. I've also noticed that the milege meter doesn't work properly. This problem started a while ago where the meter will go pass 120 MPH although the truck could be standing still. At other times, you can see the milege meter drop all the way down from 70 to 0 while driving down the interstate.
~If you read that with a fuel tester gauge on oil lines, then that is a faulty oil pump, test voltages to oil pump. then eventually replace oil pump.
If instead you have that value on the instrument cluster gauge, then simply the oil pressure sender is bad, replace it.
