Intermitent electrical 1997 jeep grand cherokee has gauges and power windows that quit working and start again.

  • BarrettBC May 23, 2009

My 98 Cherokee is similar. The power windows used to work intermittently. Now they don't work at all (none of the switches or windows).
A few times the gages have all registered zero. I would tap on the clear plastic cover on the dash (the one over all the gages and speedometer), and then the gages would start registering again. Weird.

Actually if the gauges work on and off and when they do go off usually you have no power windows as well.

Under your center console, unplug the airbag module and this should solve your problem

Electrical system goes crazy!!

Dirty Power and Ground connections. Working from the Battery, disconnect and clean all joints, along the Harness to the Main power box, and do the same in there.
It is a Ball acher, but it will fix the problem.

Auto electric problem

Generally this is caused by a bad connection in the gauge plugs where the gauges connect to the harness. To verify, give the top of the dash a good smack(high tech stuff) and see if they come back on. If so, you will need to remove gauges and clean the terminal connections (sometimes bedning them slightly will also give a better connection but don't get crazy with that or you won't be able to plug them back in.
