I dont remember if that year had a theft lock system or not, but I am looking into it. disconnect the negative battery cable for ten minutes and that should get you back to where you can enter the unlock code again and use the radio.
Testimonial: "Thank you, that solved the problem, I really appreciate your help!"
If it were me I'd dump the stock radio and put one in I like. but maybe this will help you some.

Hi,
The early 300 SL suffered from dodgy HT leads and spark plugs if not regularly maintained, the problem with Mercedes Benz though is that the cars have so many features that it is almost impossible to diagnose without seeing the car. Some things to try (in this order) are : - Spark plugs, Ht leads, remove and clean Distributer Cap, replacement of HFM sensor (common fault), if none of these help then faults have been known in throttle valves and fuel pumps/filters
Happy fault finding

hello, you have a 300 se with 103 engine (straight 6 cylinder) we have two possible cause of the problem, fuel and ignition side,on workshop they have a fuel gauge to check the fuel pressure (filter, fuel pump, fuel pimp relay) on fuel side, then for ignition spare plug, distributor cap, rotor, switching unit (transistor box for ignition side,ok, when your engine stop, try to hear from the rear,if your fuel pump motor is working,or you can remove your spare plug to determine what is missing fuel or ignition,ty

Barrel fuses used to be made of aluminum and corrode on the copper contacts. Pull fuses and replace. 10-15 dollars now will help get rid of electrical gremlins.
