The check engine light comes on. I don't have an owners manual

lights come on when there is a problem that needs to be checked out at a shop, seeing as you don`t know what the light is for, first check the oil level then coolant level so no engine damage is caused then go to a shop to have it checked out.

Usually removing the positive cable from battery for about 5 minutes will reset check engine light.

Once the codes are read and the problem fixed, the codes are then erased with a code reader or scanner. If no codes return, the light will stay off.

If you read your owners manual you will learn something,
not much, but have to start somewhere

Check lights have been on all vehicles since 1983, some
31 years. SO--I don't know what to tell you, when you say
you don't know what it means

You can speculate all you want,what you need to do is check for
codes,again what most people have done for 3 decades,look
them up & then have a repair shop diagnose the code fault

Have no vehicle history on maintenance,or if someone
just put the problem in there

Please refer to the owners manual for red light warning, it can be low oil pressure or hot engine or emissions system. If you don't have an owqners manual you can find used ones on eBay Motors.

There are lots of lights that indicate problems, this light actually says error? Have you checked the owners manual? If you don't have an owners manual go HERE to download one free.

The light will have an icon too, if the icon shows square shape rectangle with + and - symbol then its for battery, ((!)) is for hand brake and a small engine shape is for engine. You can find the images of these icon on Google as they are almost same on all cars. PS: Don't drive the car when these lights come up on dash and show your car to a good mechanic immediately.

This should only be indicating time for an oil change. Now, if the red, check engine light comes on, then you have an oil/engine problem.

Possibly the maintenance light wasn't reset when the last change was done. If you don't have the owners manual to check, I found a referenced method (below) to reset it through AMSOIL synthetic oil products. Good Luck

To reset Engine Oil light. Turn the ignition key to RUN with the engine off. Fully press and release the accelerator pedal three times within five seconds. If the Change Engine Oil light is flashing, the system is reset. The light will flash for up to 30 seconds or until the ignition is turned off. If the light comes on again and stays on for 30 seconds at the next ignition cycle, it did not reset. You will need to reset the system again.
