The output shaft speed sensor lets the computer know how fast you are going down the road to help it pick gear change points..
Yes, you can buy one and replace it.
First check the wires and plug going to it.
Your manual will probably describe its location better than me, but it will be toward the rear of the gearbox and usually has a small gear on the end that meshes with a mating gear on the output shaft as you put it in.

SOURCE: Dodge Durango 1998 5.2L Output Speed Sensor code P0720 Location

Its in different locations depending on if its 2wd or 4wd. For 2wd its in front of the drice shaft or for 4wd its in the tranfer case, just look for a white shape like box with wires plugged into it and you need a socket to remove it, iam not sure how much it is to replace as the cost varies at different shops.

SOURCE: Location of Speed Sensor 1998 Ford Explorer XLT

polarcycle is right but there is a speed sensor on the drivers side top of the trans. toward the tail shaft or transfer case. there is as well a sensor inside the trans. itself that is mounted on the web. behind the overdrive band and drum.

The brown wire from the downstream sensors is broken or otherwise not connected to the computer. Check for damage to the wire.

Diagram of 99 audi a6 quattro speed sensor location

I'm struggling with mine right now as well. Tio find it follow the drivers side axle to where it enters the transmission. You will find the vehicle speed sensor on the side of the transmission adjacent to the axle at about 10 o-clock. There will be a wire lead attached to it with a metal keeper. Pull the keeper and the wire from the top and work the plastic arm free of the transmission. It will then pull straight out, the only resistance will be the rubber o-ring keeping it tight.

Good luck.

1997 expedition PO503 code, 4WD, 4.6 motor, changed coil pack and spark plug

The code is specific to the engine speed sensor located on the side of the transmission near the output shaft. This device measures the output shaft rotation speed and allows the Electronic Control Unit (ECU - power control module) to program gear shifts as well as when to engage anti lock braking or traction control (by monitoring the output shaft speed sensor and comparing this with inputs from the wheel hub sensors). Locate the speed sensor connection and make sure the all the electrical contacts are free of dirt and corrosion. Remove the speed sensor and make sure that it looks physically OK and is clean, especially its tip. Check that all the wires are intact and that there is electrical continuity back to the ECU. The error code is consistent with an intermittent connection but if you suspect that the sensor itself is at fault it is not a very expensive item to replace.
