I hate to say it, but, if it starts cleanly and quickly on all cylinders its likely to be a switch/sensor/ thermoswitch etc.
Does it run cleanly?
Are the fluid levels correct?
The fuel injection has a cold start system but the ECU needs information from intake manifold, water temp and incoming air flow to maintain its running.
Get on the web and go to Porche owners forums or find your nearest (Bosch?) agent to help.
Wikepedia says there are 3 engines and they use Bosch Motronic systems. See what yours has and search for diagrams/handbooks etc on the web/ebay. There's piles of stuff out there for Bosch systems.

SOURCE: 1985 944 porsche speedometer stop working

First place to look is behind the dash. Its unlikely to be the 'sensor', as its a cable driven speedo...this would suggest the dashboard panel is falling to bits...you may be able to pick up a scrap on from somewhere...

1986 Porsche 944. Instruments not working

Sounds like a possible fuse problem. Have you checked your fuses yet. If not look in your owners manual to see which fuse(s) control your instrument panel, or anything else you are having trouble with. Keep in mind, if a short did occur for some reason, more than one fuse may be blown. When i accidental crossed two door lock wires, i blew 6 fuses, some of which were not even related to the wires i crossed. Hope this helps

I just bought a 1985 porsche 944. I just put in a

Find and remove the horn fuse or relay to keep the horn from blasting and attempt to start the vehicle. If it starts inspect the clearance between the horn switch and its ground contact. If there is a factory alarm, which I doubt, that has been reset by disconnecting the battery/battery going dead then call your local Porsche dealer for additional advice.

Extra key lock

It's kind of crazy to think of it now, but back in the 80's, Porsche thought this was the most stylish practical place to put the switch for the alarm system. Some of them have it, some don't, as it was an option.
