Question about Dodge Neon

Engine revs high in park and neutral

I have a 2003 Dodge Neon SE and my check engine light constantly comes on and off. When I got it checked out I was told nothing was wrong, but starting last night when I put my car in park or neutral the engine begins to rev really high and when I drive the car begins to accelerate on its own when I take my foot off the gas. Can you please help me figure out the problem?

Clean the throttle body butterflies! And, while you're at it, go to the auto parts store and have them hook up their scanner and give you the code and their recommendation print out.

Throttle position sensor or idle controll valve sensor. Get them from the dealer the sensors from parts stores are junk.

SOURCE: engine revs up and down

Sounds like a bad IAC motor, or a vaccuum leak, or low coolant... I would definately start with checking these things first

SOURCE: Engine revs up to 3000-4000 rpm all by itself

THERE IS A TEMPERATURE SENSOR ON MOTOR WHICH CAUSES THIS PROBLEM... USUALLY IT SHOWS A NEGATIVE TEMP READING WHICH CONFUSES THE COMPUTER CAUSING IT TO REV UP....HAVE THE ENGINE DIAGNOSED ON A SCANNER....GOOD LUCK...

I know this original question was written quite a few months back but I was wondering if you ever found out what the high pitch sound was. I just purchased a used 2005 Honda Odyssey and it is doing the exact same thing. Any advice?

Engine revs high in park & neutral

you could have a vacum leak some where in the system that can cause high rpm, also if you have a bad tps(throttle position sensor) it can cause this type of problem.you don`t say if you have check to see what is turning on the check engine light and what code is in the computer.this should have been done and may have help to find the problem in the begining.

2003 dodge neon my son knocked it out of d into neutral. car cut off and now it won't crank. tested starter, battery, and fuses all good .. i replaced neutral saftey switch in transmission.. nothing all...

You've checked all the fuses. The fuse's in question
are #9 #10 #11 these are ign/start related. Also in the
power dist. center under the hood left side by the battery, check fuse #21. The starter relay is also
located in the pwr. dist ctr. Also if you have a factory
anti theft system. It could cause this problem.
Hope this helps.

2002 dodge intrepid se 2.7 engine light on got

Anytime a Chrysler product of this year has a check engine light, get it to a dealer immediately. The 2.7 liter engine is notorious for oil sludging. This can be a dangerous problem that can destroy the engine.

Your problem may have nothing to do with oil sludging, and I hope it doesn't; but don't take a chance.

Google "Chrysler engine oil sludging."

Oil pressure light on at idle

Don't delay on this. Take the vehicle in and have the oil pressure sensor checked. It could be just the sensor or it could be something more serious. A drop in oil pressure could lead to catastrophic engine failure.
