I just installed a used transmission in my 92 ford explorer . it a automatic overdrive 4x4 . when driving it sometimes acts like it wants to slip between gears from first to 2nd and from 3rd to 4th it switches back and forth pending on how hard i press the gas. If press the gas hard from take off it shifts fine from 1st to 2nd but slips from 2nd to 3rd if i lightly press the gas on take off it slips from 3rd to 4th. could this be a bad transmission ?

taken from another suv it has 100,000 miles on it and was supposed to be good
it is a 1992 ford explorer 4x4 automatic 4.o vs yes i was told it has bands ? Im really not sure . I dont know how to test it i was told that it was out of a wrecked suv and that it shifted fine i checked the fluid and it looked a little dirty but still red and didnt smell burnt.
the spot on the door says T i got the transmission from a 92same exact everything . i do not think that anything was changed on the transmission that i got from the wrecked one .
Thanks a lot very help full i do in fact have a leak just noticed it from the pan the gasket was reused .....mine has 180k the one it came from had 100k i do not think it was used for towing it didnt have a hitch or ball and bumper looked to be in good shape not like it a trailer was hooked to it or anything. it does have the vacume on the side of the transmission i will check for leak or leaks . I asked the guy who installed it and he is trying to tell me that there is an adjustment on the side of the transmission for the bands ????
and here is what he says there is two bolts half way up the left side they are loose cuase i
tried to see it it would help it, anyway loosen the nuts then turn the
studs in half to three quaters of a turn then tighten the nuts, see if
that helps at all!!

A4LD Transmissions
No adjustment is necessary or possible on the A4LD transmission Park Neutral Position (PNP) switch.
How many miles did you have on your vehicle when you had the transmission changed?
Here's what you need to do:
1) You need to absolutely find out if the clutch plate/disc was brought over from the wrecked vehicle's transmission. At 100k, it's hard to say whether or not there was much life left on it. It really depends on the previous owners use. Maybe they towed?
2) There could also be a possible vacuum leak:
Only the A4LD transmissions use a vacuum diaphragm (or modulator). All other models are PCM controlled and do not require vacuum supply from the engine. You mentioned you had a T tranny: 1991-94 code T is for the A4LD transmission. Check for possible leaks as this could cause the modulator not to engage properly.
Good luck, it sucks that you're having problems, but transmissions are complicated and unless you have a full understanding of how they work. A reputable transmission shop is what I would really recommend. I'm sorry if I can't tell you to just do this and this and that would fix it.
So, here's some bit of information that may be important:
There are 5 automatic transmissions used in the Ford Ranger, Explorer and Mountaineer. They may be identified by checking the transmission code on the Safety Standard Certification Label attached to the driver's side door post, in the space marked Trans. The transmissions can also be identified by a tag attached to the lower left hand extension attaching bolt. The transmission codes are as follows:
1991-94 code T is for the A4LD transmission
1995-99 code T is for the 4R44E (2.3L, 2.5L & 3.0L) or 4R55E (4.0L) transmission
1996-99 code U is for the 4R70W (5.0L) transmission
1997-99 code D is for the 5R55E (5-speed automatic) transmission
All of the automatic transmissions are 4-speed units with a lock-up torque converter, except the 1997-99 5R55E, which is a 5-speed unit with a lock-up torque converter.
I think it's important to identify which transmission went into your Explorer, can you get that number for me?
So, one of the things I did want to find out is if your vehicle had a pressure plate, which is does. Can you find out if this was change? It's possible that your pressure plate is worn and therefore the reason the transmission is slipping. It's called a clutch disc and its designed to wear with use.
Hmmm, supposed to be good and are good are really two different things. Unfortunately, there's no way to test a used transmission like that is there? Can you give me more specs on your current vehicle? Number of cylinders, what liter size, etc? I'd like to look up to see if there are specs on the transmission. I'd like to see what sort of clutch plate it uses, etc. Do you know if it uses a clutch plate? If so, was that changed as well?
You mentioned you installed a used transmission, was it rebuilt, or literally taken from another similar vehicle? Do you know how many miles it had on it if it's used and not a rebuilt tranny?
Automatic 2001 325i will drive if you give very little gas but if you give too much it feels like its "slipping" and rpms go up and car wont accelerate and sometimes when rpms go up and it tries to switch gears if feels like a hit in the tranny and the car will be in one gear like 3rd or 4th and a light goes on beside the "D" the shape of a gear and there wont be anymore slipping but if you want to accelerate you have to give a lot of gas, and to "reset" it to make it switch gears again you have to restart the car to reset. The problem has gotten worse over time... it used to be catchy or itd feel like the tranny was slipping but catching on and only in first gear. Now its 1st 2nd gear and reverse and once it switches to 3rd i can give a lot of gas and it will accelerate almost normally.
