2002 Saturn SL1 rough, sputtering idle - cylinder #1 misfiring

I just bought a 2002 Saturn SL1 automatic with 57,000 miles and I just noticed that it idles rough, sputtering like it's going to stall out, when sitting at stop lights and stop signs. Oddly enough, when I turn the air conditioner on, the RPMs increase by about 50-100 and the problem goes away. I also don't have any problems while driving; only when stopped. The check engine also just came on. I had the computer codes read at Advance Auto this morning and it came back as cylinder #1 misfire. Any idea what it might be?

My 2002 Saturn SL has 138,000 miles on it. I have the same type of problem, but the misfiring tends to occur more when it rains or is wet outside. The engine will sputter after I start it and act as though it's going to quit. When I shift into reverse and drive, I almost have to keep my foot on the accelerator so it doesn't kill on me.

Another question: How do I know when I my EGR valve needs to be replaced?

It was the intake manifold. Thanks

Spray some carb cleaner on the passeger side of the intake manifold, right behind the alternator. it is very common for those to leak there and cause those exact problems

Hello, my 2001 saturn sl1 has some idling problems, it will idle high sometimes when we put it into parl after driving it which we weretold was our 3rd cylinder misfire. but also when we drive for a long...

A number 3 cylinder misfire will not cause a high idle-a throttle position sensor or (most likely) the Idle Air Controller is gunked up with carbon and is hanging open. It can be removed and cleaned with throttle body cleaner, just clean the bottom half and avoid spraying the inside-top as it will mess up the electronics. They aren't cheap (over $100) so it is worth a shot cleaning it. The sputtering you are experiencing IS probably a #3 misfire and that can be caused by a bad plug wire, a vacuum leak, plugs needing replaced, or possibly a coil that is defective or not grounded properly. You should have a check engine light, and that code would help greatly-I would almost expect, as a generalization, a misfire at #4 since that is the cylinder that is monitored for codes dealing with camm sensors (it doesn't have a cam sensor, that is just Saturn's way of warning you that you might need a tuneup). Your clunking when shifting is a valve body issue, and it is because the trans needs to be or has not been serviced often enough-changing the trans fluid in a Saturn is as easy as it gets, it is like an engine oil change ans should be done every 30,000 miles, at most. Change your fluid, use Dextron III and a new trans filter (it is a spin-on and lools like an engine oil filter)-do this now, do not let it go, because the trans will only get worse, and that slamming into gear will damage the input shaft.

2002 Saturn SL1 check engine light code P0303

replace the coil it is most likely bad. observe the engine at night or in a dark environment and proceed to use a spray bottle to lightly coat the coil pack for that cylinder number 3 and if you see an arc at the coil or any where else this will confirm a bad coil but even if you don't see any arcing it still may be a weak coil.

Will not start after it stalls untill about 5-10 minutes

spray carb cleaner on the intake manifold near cylinder 1... common problem is the intake manifold gasket leaks vacuum causing a misfire...the not starting could be due to a faulty crank sensor
