1997 Oldsmobile Aurora wont start, problem with security key?

My '97 Oldsmobile Aurora wont start. It ran fine for a few weeks after my mechanic replaced fuel pump and fixed the air conditioner which had ruined a belt. A few days before it stopped working this time, I would put the key in and nothing would turn on except for a few lights like the ABS light when the key was in ON position But it would eventually turn over. I don't remember any clicking sounds before it turned over. Now it's not turning over at all. We checked the battery and it was drained. We had it checked (it checked out perfect because it's less than a year old and high-quality) then we charged it manually. The car still didn't turn over. It still only turns on the inside information center when it's in the ON position but then that goes off when I try to start it and all that stays on is a few lights like the ABS light. We checked ALL 4 fuse/relay boxes in the car (by "we" I mean my dad). Everything checked out fine. My dad's new theory is that it may be the coded security key that is as old as the car and certainly showing some wear. Does that sound like the culprit? Or is there something else "we" should be checking?

P.S.: This site is awesome! You guys nailed the problem we had with my Mom's 2002 Sable last week. Thanks so much.

Oh, I have something to add but I'm not sure if this is the same problem. Since I got the car a few years ago it has been having the following problem: usually when I'm idling the air conditioner and/or radio will turn on by itself. Right now my cd player doesn't even work, it gives me the same error number after the radio has turned on by itself which is "Err 22". What is this "Err 22" and does it have anything to do with my current problem of not starting?

I just asked and my dad said he check all wires and ground wires and they were fine. So my problem continues...

  • jenna8899 May 01, 2009

exact same problem and I too have checked ground wires, battery and the rest as original poster did. Is it really a problem with coded key?

This is fixed...it was the starter. $860 because the mechanic my dad wanted was $120/hour labor.

This problem is solved. It was the starter. I thought the mechanic would have checked it before but he didn't and I had to shell out more cash. Thanks everyone.

I have a 97 Oldsmobile Aurora, how do i remove the Ignition Switch and when i do get it out will it work in another olds aurora , so basically i want to put the 97 switch in a 95

You might interupt the security system thats on your vehicle. If you make the switch and the security icon pops up on the dash. That vehicle wont start ever again. at least till you fix the security. Is there a little black chip in your key? Thats a dead give away, If there is a chip, you'll have a one in 15 chance that it will work.

'97 Olds Aurora prob with coded key and Error 22 on radio

If the battery is definitely good ... (checked by whom? I've seldom find anyone at stores that could check a battery to save their lives) are you sure? A good battery should run your headlights for at least 4 hours with the engine not running ... And the terminals are good and clean, your sure? Both sides of the Negative cable is good ... After trying to start it (you say its not turning over or cranking) do the thick battery cables get quite warm or HOT? (why it is killing the battery) You may have a bad starter ... or the engine is seized ... Save the problem of fixing your CD player for after you can start the car ... unless you plan on sitting in the driveway rocking out!
