I am unable to change the ECON setting on the heater control. Therefore the A/C will not kick in. The a/c unit was checked and all is fine. Someone told me it maybe a high or low pressure switch? The dealer told me to replace the control module in the dash. I am able to tunn the unit off and change the temp settings.

Your A/C system has lost its refrigerant, and will automatically go into "ECON" at that time. System will have to be leak tested , repaired, and recharged. Hope this helps.

i have a 96 DeVille that did the same thing. It means your coolant tank is almost empty. It switches automaticlly to preserve based upon temp readings.

This is normally one of 3 problems:
1 - Refriant too low
2 - Pressure sensor faulty
3 - Climate Control Unit faulty
In order of cost -
1 - Re gas approx 49 pounds
2 - New sensor - 50 Pounds
3 - New climate control unit circa 700 pound
I have just had the same issue and after a re gas and new sensor it all works okay.

If the a/c does not engage as a result of the electronic control system in your 1996 Cadillac, the climate control system may need to be replaced.
However, if the problem is being caused by low charge of R134a in the system, have the system charged before changing that electronic part.
I have never seen a Cadillac Climate Control System do this, which leads me to believe that it may be more electronic than refrigerant pressure related.
If the refrigerant pressure was low in the system, the climate control system should still stay on 'auto' mode, I think, and simply blow warm air.
