SOURCE: backfiring

The backfiring on deceleration is typically associated with a loose timing chain.

If you put a wrench on the harmonic balancer bolt, turn the balancer gently until you feel the chain tighten, then rotate the opposite way until it tightens, how far does is move.
If it goes more than an inch, it is getting sloppy. If it moves closer to 2 inches, it is worn out.
Try that first then let me know and we can go from there.
Good luck.

Were do i spray starter fluid to get my 1994 buick roadmaster started Lt1 motor

Into the throttle plate , Look at round black rubber tube from air filter box over to the engine ! Use a screw driver , loosen the clamp and pull the hose off the engine , where it fastens is call throttle body . Look inside you'll see a round disk or plate what ever you want to call it . Have someone step on the gas pedal and hold it down , you will see the plate open . This is where you spary the starter fluid ! After spraying some fluid in have the person holding the gas pedal down , release it . Then try to start the vehicle .

Spark plug gap settings chart

You should be using platinum or iridium plugs with the LT1, and you don't gap those, they are set at the factory. If for some reason you want to use copper, it's .050", but they are going to wear out faster so you aren't saving any money by using them. Also, it's not a very easy job, so you wouldn't want to have to do it two or three times when you could have done it once.
