Fuel Gage Inaccurate or Inoperative

  1. Install a scan tool.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. Select the PCM display DTCs function on the scan tool.
Does the scan tool display any DTCs?
--
YES - Go to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List (2.4L) or Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List (3.4L) in Engine Controls
NO - Go to Step 3

3

With the scan tool, select Instrument Panel Cluster, Special Functions and command the fuel gauge UP.
Does the fuel gauge complete a full sweep when commanded?
--
YES - Go to Step 4
NO - Go to Step 12
  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the fuel level sender.
  3. Connect the J 33431-C Signal Generator and Instrument Panel Tester between the signal circuit of the fuel level sender and the ground circuit of the fuel level sender.
  4. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  5. Important: Verify the J 33431-C resistance setting with a DMM.
  6. Set the resistance on the J 33431-C to 40 ohms.
Does the fuel gauge display at or below empty?

Not getting oil pressure when turned on runs rough, oil pressure gauge is pegged high on 99Bonneville SE

I suspect the gauge/sender/ or wiring is bad. Does the gauge peg with the key on, but engine not running? An engine wont run long(maybe 10 min with no oil pressure). suspect gauge has nothing to do with a rough running.

Has 358000 miles, just had leaks repaired. Twice since my oil pressure gauge reads no pressure but not all the time? Why

1. Oil Pressure Gauge Not Working You will notice this happens when your oil pressure gauge is not reading, whether the engine is turned off, idle or running. Try to step on the gas to rev up the engine. If the oil pressure gauge still doesn't change its reading, your gauge is busted. It's best to replace it as soon as possible because you won't have any idea if your car is already overheating or not.
2. Oil Pressure Gauge Reading Too Low When your engine is idle, the oil pressure gauge will have a low reading. When the engine starts running or when you're already cruising or on the freeway, your gauge's reading should have increased. If it stays on a low reading, then you now your oil pressure gauge is broken.
3. Oil Pressure Gauge Reading Too High Another common oil pressure gauge problem is when your oil pressure gauge is reading too high when your engine is idle or when it's turned off. Rep

1997 Honda CRV temperature gauge spikes to Hot

You have to thank the Gauge that shuts down your engine when hot bec. it wont knock...you have to clean your radiator and see if the coolant inside it run through the radiator holes to the engine water jacket to make sure your engine will not over heat...For the fans, find the fan relay...it's under the hood in the fuse box...

My battery keeps dying in my '94 accord and I think it has something to do with the fuel gauge/sending unit. When I turn the key off the fuel gauge still reads the fuel level. I disconnected the fuel...

The fuel sending unit is bad. When they go bad they will read at different levels than what is in the tank. It could be grounding out but not likely when you remove the power wires.

Oil light blinks on and off could pressure switch be bad if so where is it located on a 2000 ford windstar 3.0

Oil Pressure Switch Operation:
00134_oil_pressure_switch_gauge.jpgInformation relay unit for the indicator light or gauge on instrument panel. It contains a diaphragm that responds to changes in oil pressure. When the oil level is over a pre-set limit, the diaphragm opens the switch, turning off the light. When level is below the pre-set limit, the dash light comes on. In later model cars, if the oil pressure drops, the switch turns off the fuel pump, to stop the engine and limit damage to internal parts. Oil pressure switches can be grouped into two categories, units for electrical gauges and for mechanical gauges.

Oil pressure can be checked at the sending unit passage with an externally mounted mechanical oil pressure gauge. To get accurate results from the test, make sure you follow the manufacturer's recommendations and compare your findings to specifications.
Testing the Oil Pressure Gauge
  • Test the gauge by grounding the wire that leads to the sending unit on the block.
  • When the wire is disconnected from the sending unit with the key switch on, the needle on the oil pressure gauge should be either all the way high or all the way low. Grounding the wire should make the needle move to the opposite side of the gauge from where it was before the wire was grounded. If the vehicle is equipped with an oil pressure light, touching the wire to ground and then removing the wire from ground should turn the light on and off.
  • If either happens, the gauge and wiring are good and the sending unit is at fault.
Testing Oil Pressure
Pressure can be tested by temporarily installing an oil pressure gauge in place of the sending unit. Before testing, look up the oil pressure specifications for your vehicle in the appropriate service manual.
  • Bring the engine up to operating temperature.
  • Now shut the engine off.
  • Locate the oil pressure sending unit; usually it is on the lower side of the engine block.
  • Disconnect the wire from the sending unit and use an open ended wrench to remove the sender. Using pliers can damage the unit.

  • Tighten the oil pressure test gauge into the hole in the block where the sender was removed.

  • Check the engine's oil level and fill, if required.
WARNING Be extremely careful when working near a running engine. Always wear safety goggles or glasses with side shields when working around moving machinery and be sure that your clothing is not loose.
  • Now turn the engine on and check the oil pressure on the gauge.
    • Watch as the engine warms to note any excessive drops due to temperature.
    • Make sure the engine speed is set to specifications for testing pressure.
    • If necessary, us a tachometer and adjust the engine idle speed.
  • Record the measured oil pressure, then turn off the engine.
  • Compare the test results with the manufacturer's specifications.
    • If the oil pressure is within specifications, this shows that the oil pressure sending unit may not be working correctly.
    • In many cases, replacing the oil sending unit will correct the problem.
  • After the test is complete, reinstall the oil pressure sending unit, start the engine, and confirm there are no leaks.
