97 v-6 Jetta. Starts, runs and drives fine. But when shut it off and return 5-20 min. later, wont start. Wait til cold and starts fine again. However, if after driving and parking, you disconnect battery cable, it will always start again whether hot or cold....Also, if leave battery connected and do not drive for a week or so, battery will run down and be dead!
Battery cables/terminals clean and fine...car cranks over but doesnt fire up is the issue....Battery cables/terminals clean and fine...car cranks over but doesnt fire up is the issue....

That could be your ignition coil. Sometimes when they go bad, they stop working when they get hot. That could be your ignition coil. Sometimes when they go bad, they stop working when they get hot.

The 97 Jetta has a built in security system and if you hot wire anything it interferes with it and will shut the car down and will not start again. Un hook the battery and wait 5 mins and then hook it back up. The alarm might go off so use the key to turn it off and then try to start the car. That should fix it and if not I cannot fix it without seeing it. Sorry and hope that it works for you. It has happened to me when I switched out my stereo with an aftermarket one.
It's your Electronic Stability System. It may be malfunctioning because of the cold temperature or triggered by another malfunctioning system. You need to take it in for a diagnostic investigation.
I just recently have been fighting the same problem with the same make/model/year vehicle. For myself, I would drive off and on through the day and it would run fine. Then suddenly after a start it would run rough and die. I would have to wait 20 to 60 mins before it would start again. I had it checked and fuel pump was only putting out around 19 psi. It should be around 41 psi. Had fuel pump replaced and no more problems. Furthermore, now it runs so much better. It's funny how over time I didn't notice how the performance was slowly degrading. Unfortunaley fuel pumps for this car run around $300.

If it was the coil, what would explain the elect. drain? car starts and runs fine if you just disconnect the battery every time you shut it off!
