Is it possible that I would need a new alternator for a 2003 BMW 325xi.
I just had my oil changed and two days later BOOM my alternator goes. Could they have done something to my car while changing the oil?
thanks
65k miles but it sounds like i have to **** it up and pay for another alternator 65k miles but it sounds like i have to **** it up and pay for another alternator
I agree that 65,000 is low for a new alternator, u are sure the alt has failed?I agree that 65,000 is low for a new alternator, u are sure the alt has failed?

I have noticed when the oil is changed, there is a splash/skid plate near the drain plug and old oil may collect on top of that plate, then drip down later.
Worth a look.
check the alternator and wiring to battery. if belt is ok. then when car is off, voltage at battery should be at least 12.6 or better. when it is running, at battery should be at least 14.1 to 14.7. jump start car, try this, with car running, remove negative battery cable car should still run, if alternator is ok. if it quits when taking cable off,of battery. its the alternator thats bad. but if it run ok with cable off. then its your battery.
have your charging system checked to make sure alternator is charging to specs, also make sure no light are left on, (trunk light ,glove box mirror light.it sounds like you may have a draw somewhere, may be alternator or something is on, hope this is helpful.
Need to test the battery ,and the alternator for a discharge .Was a new alternator used or a reconditioned one ?? ignore the lights for the minute because they sound as though the regulator is working ,iam more concerned about the diode pack in the alternator, hence was it a new one or a recon or one from a scrappers
first off never never never trust a tow truck driver they are idiots, it takes a BMW 15 mins to go into a sleep mode before a draw can be mesured, as for the dealership they should have caught that using the Midtronics batt/alt tester that is standard from BMW 2.5 years for a batt replacement is reasonable especially in a BMW based on the high demand on the electrical system, I just replaced an alt on an M54 enginge just today so they do go bad, have them give you a print out from the midtronics with your VIN on the printout showing your alt is bad and what the batt is.
How old is the gearbox oil? In some cases, older oil (higher viscosity when old) will be too "thick" in colder weather and inhibit the synchro on your gears from slipping into 1st gear. The reason it only happens in 1st, is 'cause the shifting mechanism on the forward change is finer than that of the reverse change.
POSSIBLE Solution: Replace the gearbox oil with a lower viscosity ie. "thinner" oil.
ok but do you think I would need a new one being only 6 yrs old

I SERIOUSLY DOUBT THAT.
