My 1996 Nissan Sentra 134K miles- automatic transmission. This happened before I had a tune up. I performed a tune up thinking it would resolve this problem, and it happened afterwards. Driving down the road, pushing the gas to give it power, well, noticing at the 40 m.p.h. mark, it just wont give anymore power - gas pedal is to the floor, and it just won't give anymore power. After taking foot off gas, because this freaks me out, I eased on the pedal just gently, and went, but not sure if it would not give power after 40 mph.

IF YOU ARE LOSING THAT MUCH FLUID THEN YOU HAVE A SEVERE LEAK, DO NOT PUT OFF HAVING IT CHECKED BECAUSE RUNNING A AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION LOW ON FLUID WILL CAUSE SEVERE DAMAGE PRETTY QUICKLY
There is nothing unusual about a automatic transmission failing at 130,000 miles. I will ask have you had the fluid and filter serviced every 60,000 miles as recommended? That can extend transmission life. I speak from 40 years of being a professional auto repair technician.
A tune up consists of the followig:
-Spark plug replacement
-Air filter cleaning/replacement
-Fuel Filter replacement
-Engine timing correction.
So yes, you must do a tune up every once in a while and a must before an emissions evaluation.
It's not very costly and can be easily affordable by someone who can purchase gas for everyday use. For a 1996 Nissan Sentra, most of the cost will come from the spark plug that you will buy and the labor cost for correcting the timing of the vehicle.
Do you have a CVT? (Continuosly Variable Transmission) I doubt that you do so if you dont, nissans are known to have hard shift into second gear you mean.(Once the car moves, its already in first gear) so if it shifts fine into other gears, I wouldnt worry too much unless it gets worse.
