SOURCE: Transmission shifts harsh after driving it 10-15 miles

alright, since the computer sees the transmission slipping, it maximizes pressure to try and compensate. with the 1870 code it is referring to the lockup clutch in the converter. I have seen colleagues remove the TCC (torque converter clutch) valve from the valve body and insert a stiffer spring to remedy the situation, but i have only seen it work effectively once. It almost always resulted in more problems and headaches wither immediately, or a week down the road.

i know its not what you want to hear, but a rebuild will probably be your best bet. hope this helps.

Note that many problems that show up as transmission issues are actually PCM or electrical, and may be external to the transmission. Try a different PCM, and check for chafing where the cables come out of the PCM.

The transmission is on the same fuse as the MAF, O2 sensors and at least one other sensor - if an O2 shorts out, it will blow the fuse and the trans will go into limp-home mode. Be sure the trans has power and the fuse is not blown before doing anything else.

Limp mode is a fault mode in which the transmission either loses electrical power or the PCM deactivates all of the electronics. The transmission will default to max line pressure. The driver will have Reverse and 3rd, with manual 2nd available by putting the gearshift in 2 or 1 (doesn't matter). 1st, 4th, and TCC lockup will not be available. It will not hurt the car to drive it like this for short periods, but use manual 2nd to get the car moving, and be aware that the trans will generate more heat than normal while operating in limp-home mode due to increased torque converter slippage during 2nd gear starts and no lockup in 3rd gear.

Check the wire harness clip on the transmission, passenger side by the catalytic converter. Look for any damages due to corrosion or brake in the wire leads. it's common for the clip to brake and the wire harness to loosen causing the transmission in to limp mode. Good luck and keep me posted, be glad to help you get your transmission running again soon and please rate.

Check for check ball wear on the separator plate and address it if needed. The 1-2 check ball wears out and sometimes the check ball blows through or sticks in the plate causing troubles.

Just thought I would point out a few items to think about. Good luck.

A 4l60e transmission how do I no if i have a bad 3-2 downshift sol on a 1994 chevy Pick up

Albert, Have truck scanned for trouble codes. To test a transmission solenoid, use hand held ohm meter. Instructions in second link below, the attached links are informative on the different procedures used to test solenoids.

Could a 4l60e trans from a 2000 Yukon fit in a 1997 Chevy Suburban?

Sorry to tell you this, but no. The valve body set up is different. If you have the old valve body, you could put it in. You need to replace the separator plate with it. You also need to swap the internal harness. Be careful because there are 8 check balls in there. One at the case and seven at the valve body. They have to go back in the right spots.

What could keep the truck from shifting

There are shifting solenoids in the transmission that tell the it when to shift. These are known to go bad in 4L60E transmissions. A quick check for a simple possibility is the plug going to the transmission. It will be located under the truck above or beside the tranny. If it is corroded or unplugged it will definitely stop the transmission from working correctly.

I have a 1997 chevy 1500. The Trans (4l60e) is bad i think

Before guessing at transmission problems, check the fluid level (car warmed up, engine running in Park on level ground) and have the PCM scanned for trouble codes FIRST.
Secondly, put a line pressure gauge (or visit a local trans shop) on the pressure test port and go for a drive to verify proper line pressure. Base pressure at idle in P,N,OD should be around 70psi and around 140psi in R. Max line pressure should be at least 190psi at WOT in 1st or 2nd, 225psi is optimum. If base pressure is low, trans or pump is worn out. If max pressure is low, check EPC solenoid. If reverse is slow to engage, and line pressure does not come up to at least 130psi in reverse, replace the boost valve with a Transgo 0.500" boost valve (easy fix in pan).
Slow, slipping or no reverse: “lo-reverse” clutches are worn out, fluid leak in the reverse apply circuit, or broken sunshell. It is possible to remedy a fluid problem by removing the checkball from its cage in the case in the rear of the trans may help (must remove valvebody), or adding a high-viscosity additive such as Lucas Transmission additive or other seal restorer product. May also have worn boost valve (can replace in the pan).
Soft shifting, gradual performance degradation: Poor line pressure rise due to leaking boost valve, clogged EPC filter screen, failing EPC solenoid, or worst case: leaky seals throughout. Transgo HD2-C kit fixes first two without removing trans. Seal restorer may fix last problem, but probably R&R. Also try a transmission flush with BG brand products (Firestone stocks it).
No movement in any gear: pump failure, or total loss of fluid. R&R, or refill pan and find the leak. If out of fluid, avoid running the engine until the trans is refilled to avoid pump damage. To check for pump failure, check fluid level with the engine off, then start the engine and recheck fluid level. If level does not go down when engine is running, the pump is broken.
1-2 or 2-3 shift is slow/soft above part throttle: Trans is on its way out. R&R
Good luck and start with checking your transmission fluid level. Thank you for using Fixya

1996 Z71 after truck gets up to operating temperture and after shifting into overdrive there is a clunking or jerking

And it can't seem to make up its mind whether it should be in third or fourth gear at 55 mph, right? This noise is the torque converter lockup feature malfunctioning. This is very common in 4L60E transmissions, especially in trucks with over 125,000 miles, and even more so in trucks which have been used to tow while the transmission is in overdrive (an advertised no-no). A 4L60E transmission is really only good for about 120,000-150,000 miles. There are several factory parts inside which are too weak for the job any truck owner does with his truck. I speak from many years' experience (I have been a mechanic for thirty-five years), this transmission is almost dead. I have rebuilt MANY 4L60E's over the almost twenty years GM has been putting them in every rear-wheel-drive vehicle it makes, and the best way to be happy with your transmission after you have it rebuilt is to tell the builder that as a minimum over a stock rebuild you want: A new torque converter, a hardened input shaft, the Borg-Warner 29-element input sprag, The Beast sun gear reaction shell, the Sonnax .490" pressure boost valve, a new reverse drum, an extra-wide (2 5/8") Carbon Fiber power band, all Alto Red Eagle frictions and Kolene full-thickness steels, the Sonnax "Super Hold" 1-2 and 3-4 servos, the Transgo valve body separator plate, the Sonnax cast-aluminum pinless forward accumulator piston, the Sonnax heavy-duty 2-3 shift valve, and a 15,000lb capacity auxilliary transmission fluid cooler. This build will cost about five-eight hundred bucks more than a stock rebuild, but you will have a bullet-proof transmission that you can tow 10,000-12,000 lbs with, and it won't break.

Shifting--sorry to tell you, but as a mechanic who has rebuilt MANY 4L60E transmissions, I can promise you that your transmission is dead and needs to be completely rebuilt. Tell the builder that as a minimum over a stock rebuild you want: A hardened input shaft, The Beast sun shell, all Alto Red Eagle frictions and full-thickness Kolene steels, a new reverse drum and an extra-wide Carbon Fiber power band, the Sonnax "Super Hold" 1-2 and 3-4 servos, the Sonnax Heavy Duty 2-3 Shift Valve, the Sonnax .490" Boost Valve, and the Transgo valve body seperator plate. This will cost about 600 bucks more than a stock build, but the new transmission will be bullet-proof and will last until you get rid of the truck.
You can replace the dash lights yourself; the cover snaps off the fron of the dash, there are a few 9/32nds bolts that hold the instrument panel onto the dash, and the bulbs replace from the rear.
The rust, well, you can use metal polish and a fine cotton scrap and polish it off--but it will come back; for chrome to rust, there is a defect in the dip, or a non-stainless metal in continuous contact with it.

Have an automatic trans on my c1500, 6cyl truck. How hard is it to rebuild one of these transmissions?

More than likely you have a 4L60E. (electronic shift) They are not real hard to rebuild. There are special tools required to do a complete overhaul. If your just replacing the clutches, Getting to the 1st gear clutch is the hardest. Also be sure and check the plate between the valve body and the case. This tranny is known to have check ball problems. If you have a 700R4 (has a cable to the carb to shift) Its just about the same inside as far as the clutches. There are repair books on e-bay to help. Good luck!

I don't know what kind of transmission I have in my 2004 chevy cargo astro van and want to know how to find out????? Does anyone know if it is a 4L60E or 4L65E???

It's a 4L60E which is the same as the 4L65E. The 4L65E has different internal parts like the sun gear has 5 gears in it and the front pump has 13 vain as to the 4L60E has 4 sun gears and 10 vain front pump. Note the 5 sun gear in the 4L65 E can handle more torque but the gear cage is thinner and the 13 vine pump is weaker and prone to failure more then the 10 vain. The best improvement to the 4L60E is to swap out the servo's with a corvette servo's. The servo's will cost you under $50.00 and can be installed with out removing the transmission valve body or dropping the transmission pan and takes about 45 min to replace it. You will have a firmer shift feel and you can buy it at Auto Zone and get the step by step instructions for free to replacing the 4L60E servo. Good luck and hope this helps, keep me posted. Be glad to help.

1997 Chevy pickup

It is a very common issue If you have a 4L60E, you may have a problem with the valve body. As the valves bores get worn hydraulic pressure is compromised, there are fixes out there for this transmission, check out www.sonnax.com they have many parts to help resolve the transmission of these problems. Also you should check or replace your separator plate as sometimes the check balls that regulate the hydraulics of the transmission become stuck onto the plate. I've done quite a few of this model transmission and its almost always the valve body problem. HOWEVER FIRST CHECK YOUR FLUID CONDITION, if the fluid is good and there isn't a large amount of debris in the pan you should try to either get a new valve body or have your rebuilt with the parts from sonnax that eliminate these hard shift problems.
