I would change the coolant temperature sender. Not the one for the gauge if it has one, the one for the computer. This is what tells the ECU to go into phase lock loop.

I had this problem too exept I have no clue what parts or blah b;ah blah. I just know that my coil pack was getting fried.burnt out because my wires were bad. The mechanic I went to was a moron because I took the car to him 3 times and he kept saying it was the coil ad kept replacing it. I took it to my uncle and he said my wires were in horrible shape and when this is the problem it fries your coil making your car run like a lawn mower! Well all i did was replace my wires and the car ran great! Well I hope this helped..

SOURCE: 94 olds hard starts when warm, starts when cold and runs rich

If you can get a fuel pressure gauge, check and see if the pressure is 16 to 24 lbs after the engine has warmed up.
I would connect the pressure gauge when the engine is cold, make sure it does not leak or touch anything hot, place the gauge between the hood and the windshield and drive the vehicle until it is at the temperature you feel it "starts hard". Shut the engine off and try to repeat the no start or hard start and make sure the pressure is correct.
Also, when you shut the engine off, watch the pressure and make sure it holds and does not drop to (0 LBS) of pressure.
One last question, has the fuel filter been changed in the past 30K.
Let me know.
Regards,

Where is the transmission control module on a 1993 Mazda Protege DX?

powertrain control mudule is behind the radio another way you can get to it is inside the car as you sit down in the drivers seat look straight down on the right side up by the gas pedal there is a panel you have to remove its kind of hard to get off theres some screws holding the panel in place once you remove this panel you may gain access to the powertraincontrol mudule.

Check the air inlet boot going from the air filter to the intake for rips or holes. If rips exist, this would allow air to bypass the filter and mass air flow sensor and will lead to a check engine light appearing. The code would read "too lean, bank 1." If this problem is allowed to continue for long periods of time, the EGR ports will have to be cleaned out and maybe even the intake.

1994 mazda protege 1.8 l auto trans won't start

It could be a faulty Engine Coolant Temperature sensor. It sounds like when it is cold, your computer is interpreting your signal from the ECT (or lack therof) as being at a certain temperature and not providing the right amount of fuel in order to start the engine when it is cold. Does the check engine light blink or flash at all?
