Need some help on a new used truck I recently bought (2003 GMC Sonoma ZR2). Doing some routine maintenance on it. I went to change my transfer case oil this past weekend and I am confused on the volume of oil to refill it with. The model is a #233 transfer case. Here is my confusion....I drained the unit and got just over two quarts of Dexron III fluid out in the drain pan. The suprising part was it gushed out of the upper or fill hole on the case when I removed the plug. Almost like it was under pressure or over filled. When I went to refill it, I could only get a bit over a quart back in before it starting flowing out of the fill port. I have checked numerous sites and get conflicting info on how much it should take to fill it. Some say 2.3 quarts and some say 1.3 quarts. The fact that I drained over two and can only get just over one quart back in has be baffled. Any thoughts on what is going on?
Has your transmission oil been low? only reason i ask that is you said it acted like it was pressurized i have seen the rear seal on the trans go out and overfill the transfer case before. you never want to fill it over the fill hole. so if it held just over a quart that is what it takes. but there is still the question as to where the other fluid came from my guess would be watch for the trans fluid to be low.
yes if the trans is down it would mean pulling the transfer case to change that rear seal. it could happen over years that it just leaks a little at a time in which case it would be best just to leave it alone and drain the excess off every 6 months when you check the transfer case level they both take the same oil so is not that big of a deal to have some leaking into the transfer case.

I actually did the transmission filter and fluid change earlier that day. I will check the trans level again today. If it is fine, any thoughts on what to do? Is this something that would happen over a long period of time...months, years like a small leak seeping over? I just bought the truck so I don't have much history on it. If the trans is down it sounds like I have to replace the rear trans seal. Does that mean pulling the transfer case?
