2001 Pontiac Bonneville. Service engine soon light stays on. Went to Auto Zone and had them check out why the service light stays on, does not flash. They suggested to disconnect the battery, replaced fuel filler cap, had a misfire on #5 cylinder (replaced coil pack for 2 and 5), replaced plugs and wires. Haven't driven on the road yet. Let idle and rev'd up. Light is still on. How can I investigate further what the problem is. Can I jump some plug to clear the codes or read them at home without a trip to the shop. Thanks Bob

Auto Zone may lend you a code reader that will reset the light. Otherwise its about a hundred buck for the cheapest one .

Service Engine Soon came back on and the car is again stalling ????? Did you have it checked for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble code's ? Service engine soon light on , codes will be present !

usually when the check engine light is flashing it indicates that you need to tune it up. I would replace the plugs and wires. Do it one at a time so you don't forget firing order. Leave comment

This happens when your odometer reaches a set milage,indicating mantainance.Just what needs service I don't know.If you do nothing your check engine light will stay on soon.Many Pep Boys, Auto Zone will read your onboard diagnostic for nothing ( a small Tip is expected ).Then you'll know what it is.Don't rush into repair.Get estimates.It could be very minor..Filters or mid... EGR Valve ,Cat Converter.Good Luck

you need to use an OBDII scan tool that will read any "error" codes and give you the system that will be causing the check engine light to come on. this tool will also allow you to erase the code after you have read it. write the code down as you may have to pinpoint exactly what part may have failed and needs replacing. something as simple as a loose gas cap will cause the check engine light to come on. it could be any of a dozen different emission or ignition sensors that may be bad depending on the error code. all 1996 and newer vehicles sold in the US will have the OBDII system and standard diagnostic/data link connector,which is usually under the driver side of the dash, to plug the scan tool into to read the DTC's(diagnostic trouble codes).

O2 sensor could be bad
Catylic converter bad

If its an orange light its a service engine soon light, the car can be driven, if its a red check engine light DO NOT DRIVE because of risk to damage the engine. However if there is an auto zone close by they will check the light for free. Then I can work with you from there. Good Luck
