I have a 85 2.8 and it just quit going down the road and won’t start back up
Test ignition switch.
The segment sending power to the on position when cranking engine is malfunctioning that is why it starts when you release the key after cranking the starter.
Can be checked if you can reach starter by turning ignition on then shorting the starting terminal to main battery pole on the solinoide.
If it starts straight away that should point to the reason.
PLEASE MAKE SURE IT IS IN NEUTRAL OR PARK AND HANDBRAKE ENGAGED.
Regarding coil conections the negative or -- connects to distributor if it has points and condensor.
Sounds like the coil or wire.
Engine running squirt water all over the coil and wires and see if stalls.

More than likely it's the distributor. They have a tendency to build up corrosion and rust and have personally went through the same situation three weeks ago on a suburban. Check to see if you are getting spark from the distributor first. Have the ecm in the distributor checked at Oriellys for free. It's under the rotor and has two 8mm head bolts with wires plugged in at each end.

You might have computer problems.
Does the check engine light come on when it starts to miss?

Sounds like a vacuam leak, best thing to use is cold start spray, by spraying the vacuam lines with this you will notice a change in the idle wherever the leak is at.
SOURCE: 94 s10 with 4.3 w, misfires during driving.
Check fuel pressure, fuel pump maybe on the way out.
SOURCE: engine shut down while driving. it cranks over but
are you saying the engine shut off while driving and now wont start or that it will start but has continually shut off while driving? and when it shut off did it make any noise of just shut off quickly? it could be a number of things but i could suggest a few if you give me some more detail
