'Cranking' _is_ turning over. It is cranking but not firing, but you say it is 'firing' but not running. If it fires it is running but doesn't stay running.
Pulling it in neutral backwards has no bearing, BUT 'wet grass' may. Condensation (water) may be in the ignition system. Spray all the HT Leads with WD40.
Check your fuel pressure; if it is within specs, have a muffler shop test your back-pressure from your catalytic converter. There are other things that can cause strange problems like this but it is a process of elimination.
check your tps it may have gone bad. had that happen to a friend changed out the tps and when he cranked it it stayed on hope this help u out let me know
